Prime Video’s Mass Effect TV series is still in development at Amazon MGM Studios, even though EA has shut down BioWare. IGN reports, citing sources inside Prime Video, that the show hasn’t been cancelled and that every creative attached to it is still on board. Neither Amazon nor EA has made a public statement on the series.
The confirmation matters because the games side of the franchise has effectively ended. EA announced the closure on 21 October as part of a round of job cuts, and the next Mass Effect game went with the studio, as we covered when EA shut down BioWare and cut about 400 jobs. Gizmodo notes that the game will never ship, apart from a leaked trailer that Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier confirmed as real. That leaves the TV adaptation as the franchise’s main active project.
According to IGN, Doug Jung (Mindhunter, Star Trek Beyond) was serving as showrunner as of August 2025, with Daniel Casey (Fast & Furious 9) writing. The production team also included Jessica Jones executive producer Karim Zreik, BioWare’s Mass Effect boss Mike Gamble, and former Marvel Studios boss Ari Arad. IGN’s source didn’t say whether Gamble’s role has changed now that his studio is closed.
The show has been officially in development at Prime Video since 2024, though it was first rumoured in 2021 after years of failed attempts at a feature film. IGN says it won’t retread Commander Shepard’s origin story from the games and is set after the original trilogy instead. It hasn’t been smooth. In April, The Ankler reported that Amazon TV head Peter Friedlander wanted scripts rewritten to appeal to non-gamers, a claim Casey rejected on Bluesky, as Gizmodo recounts. We covered the report at the time in our piece on the Prime Video rewrites.
What’s still missing is a timeline. IGN says the series once eyed a Q4 2026 production start but has no release date. Gizmodo points out that IGN’s story doesn’t say whether the show has received a series order, which The Ankler said it hadn’t in April. IGN adds that Prime Video was reportedly hoping to repeat the success of its Fallout adaptation.
