A trailer for what appears to be the cancelled Mass Effect 5 has leaked online, a day after EA announced it was closing BioWare. As reported by Kotaku, the clip suggests the game’s title was Mass Effect Universe and that it starred a new hero working alongside original-trilogy companion Liara T’Soni. EA hasn’t confirmed the footage is genuine, and Kotaku says it has asked the company for comment.

What the trailer shows

According to Kotaku, the clip opens with a disclaimer that it uses pre-production assets but runs in-engine. A man in the N7 trench coat from BioWare’s earlier teasers meets an asari at a bar and says he used to serve in the Alliance military but now works in a “new line of work”, apparently off the books. The asari threatens him, Liara steps in, and a biotic bar fight follows before the title card appears.

GamesRadar adds that the video runs just over two minutes and contains no gameplay. It also spots a turian around the 1:31 mark and says the clip closes on a “Coming soon” card. GamesRadar reads the scenario as an ambush operation with a new ex-military human lead in place of Shepard.

Where it came from

A “new burner” Reddit account posted the video to the Mass Effect subreddit, according to GamesRadar, as a reply to a thread about an earlier claim. That claim came from a self-described EA employee, who wrote on 21 October that a Mass Effect 5 trailer had been ready “a few months” before the closure. The same person said the Mass Effect group numbered about 50 developers and that EA’s Austin office stays open, just without the BioWare name.

Gematsu reports that EA hasn’t confirmed or denied the trailer’s authenticity, but that a tweet from The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley seems to suggest it’s real. TheGamer reports that the subreddit’s moderators couldn’t verify it but concluded it might be legitimate and not AI-generated. GamesRadar says fans have combed the footage for generative-AI markers, though it finds it unlikely that something this polished appeared within 24 hours of the closure.

Why it complicates EA’s account

EA’s closure announcement said the next game was in “early development”, as Gematsu notes. A polished, title-carded trailer sits awkwardly beside that description, and Notebookcheck points out that the project was first teased in 2020, so six years of early development looks odd. DSOGaming cautions that a cinematic trailer doesn’t show the quality of the game itself, and GamesRadar says the “Coming soon” tag shouldn’t be read as a release window given how much work reportedly remained.

The timing also has a calendar hook. Kotaku and GamesRadar both note that 7 November is N7 Day, when BioWare traditionally celebrated the series, which would have been a natural slot for a reveal. Whether the studio planned that is unconfirmed.

What happens to Mass Effect now

BioWare’s closure and the cancellation were part of a wider restructuring that cost about 400 jobs, which we covered in our report on EA shutting down BioWare. There’s no word yet on whether another studio will take the franchise on. Ex-BioWare producer Mark Darrah has said EA may sell Mass Effect and Dragon Age, or simply bury them, while veterans of the original games have argued the next Mass Effect needs room to work. Games aside, Amazon’s adaptation has its own troubles: we reported earlier that the Prime Video series is being rewritten to appeal beyond gaming fans.

Kotaku expects the clip may be pulled if it’s legitimate, and Pure Xbox says it has already spotted plenty of reuploads. Treat it as a leak until EA says otherwise.

Is the Mass Effect: Universe trailer confirmed as real?

No. EA hasn’t confirmed or denied it, per Gematsu, and Kotaku describes it as unverified. Several outlets say it looks convincing and doesn’t appear to be AI-made, but that’s their assessment.

Is Mass Effect 5 still being made?

No. EA announced it was closing BioWare and cancelling the next Mass Effect, which it said was in early development. There’s no word yet on whether the franchise or the project will move to another studio.

Where can I watch the leaked trailer?

It was posted to the Mass Effect subreddit by a burner account and has been reuploaded widely. Kotaku warns it may be taken down if it’s genuine, so links may not last.
