From MASH to the Nostromo

Skerritt’s breakthrough came in Robert Altman’s 1970 comedy MASH, where he played surgeon Duke Forrest, one of the few characters who didn’t carry over to the later TV series. The 1970s also brought Harold and Maude, Fuzz, Thieves Like Us, The Turning Point and Up in Smoke. In 1979 he took the role of Captain Arthur Dallas in Ridley Scott’s Alien, a part he first turned down. He shared the Nostromo with Sigourney Weaver, Yaphet Kotto, Ian Holm, John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton and Veronica Cartwright.

The 1980s added The Dead Zone, SpaceCamp, Poltergeist III and Steel Magnolias, but Top Gun (1986) is the role many remember best. As the Commanding Officer of the Navy’s Top Gun programme, Viper kept hot-shot pilots such as Tom Cruise’s Maverick and Val Kilmer’s Iceman in line. In the 1990s he played the father in Robert Redford’s A River Runs Through It (1992), and later turned up in Contact, Tears of the Sun and A Hologram for the King. He also played himself in Seth MacFarlane’s Ted (2012).

A television career that began in the 1960s

On the small screen, Skerritt’s best-known role was Sheriff Jimmy Brock in David E. Kelley’s Picket Fences (1992-96). The part won him a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The show ran for four seasons on CBS. He also appeared in Cheers, Brothers & Sisters, Huff and The Good Wife.

Born Thomas Roy Skerritt in Detroit on 25 August 1933, he served in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He married three times and had five children.
