Google will begin moving Gemini Gems to Skills automatically on 17 November 2026, according to a new notice in the Gems manager reported by 9to5Google. The Gemini Gems to Skills migration means existing Gems can continue to be used until they move, but Google has not explained what happens to every setting or shared link.
Earlier reporting from Android Authority relied on strings in a Google app build rather than an in-product migration notice. Its 9 September teardown pointed to the same 17 November date and suggested Gem creation and editing might stop on 13 October. The notice 9to5Google saw confirms the November migration date but does not repeat that October restriction.
Gemini Gems to Skills: what changes on 17 November
The notice says Google will start automatically migrating Gems on 17 November; it does not require users to recreate each one themselves. 9to5Google saw the message in Gemini’s Gems manager, where it says people can keep using their Gems until they migrate. The report also says the linked help page and the Create skills button were not working when it checked.
Gems and Skills both save custom instructions for Gemini, but the newer Skills model is designed for reuse across tasks. Google’s Skills help page says people can call a Skill with a slash command, let Gemini apply it when relevant, or combine multiple Skills in one task. Skills are currently part of Gemini Spark.
The migration notice does not say whether a Gem’s default tool, attached reference files or share link will transfer in the same way. Google has confirmed the automatic move, not a feature-by-feature conversion guide. Anyone whose workflow depends on those details should check the resulting Skill after migration and keep original instructions and files available until it has been checked.
Who can use Gemini Skills now
Google’s current help page requires a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, a personal Google Account, an age of 18 or over, and Keep Activity to be on. Skills are not currently available through work or school accounts. Google lists the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland and the UK as regional exclusions. The page describes today’s access rules; it does not say whether they will change when Gems migrate.
That leaves a question for free Gemini users: the in-app notice says Gems will move, but Google has not explained whether every account will gain Skills access or whether the current subscription limits will apply. The notice also gives a start date, not a country-by-country timetable. The UAE is not named in the help page’s current exclusions, though Google has not published UAE-specific migration details.
Skills sit inside Gemini Spark, which Google is also building into a broader task and workflow layer. Owners still need to check whether each migrated Skill retains the files, tool choice and sharing behaviour its Gem used.
