Gemini Spark now available for macOS, and here’s what it can do

Google’s Gemini Spark gains desktop file sorting, Canva and OpenTable connections, and real-time topic tracking — here’s what UAE users can

Google has launched Gemini Spark on macOS in beta with desktop file automation and added connections to Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals. The Mac beta is US-only for Google AI Ultra subscribers; no UAE availability has been confirmed.

  • Gemini Spark for macOS is in beta for Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, starting in the US, downloadable at gemini.google/mac.
  • Spark can automate desktop tasks such as sorting PDFs into folders and building Workspace spreadsheets from local invoices.
  • New connected apps include Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals, alongside existing Google Tasks and Google Keep support.
  • Remote task execution — assigning a job from your phone for your Mac to run — is described as coming soon, not yet live.
  • Real-time tracking covers blogs, news, social media, finance, shopping, weather, sports and email; custom MCP support is also rolling out.

Google has launched Gemini Spark on macOS in beta with desktop file automation and added connections to Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals. According to Google’s Gemini announcement, the macOS app is available to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, starting in the US, with the connected apps rolling out on web and mobile over the following week. There’s also a new real-time topic tracker so Spark can watch news, sports and finance without you refreshing anything.

The catch for readers here: the Mac beta is US-only at launch, and Google has said nothing about UAE availability. Treat this as a look at where Gemini is heading rather than something you can download in Dubai today.

What Gemini Spark on macOS does

The headline change is that Spark leaves the chat window and works across your desktop files and apps. Google’s example is mundane in the best way: ask it to sort every PDF in your Downloads into folders, and it does the manual busywork instantly. It also links your desktop to Google Workspace, so you can tell it to build a budget spreadsheet from the latest invoices on your machine and schedule regular updates.

Adam Coimbra, Director of Product Management for the Gemini app, framed the update plainly:

Today, we’re rolling out updates to Gemini Spark that make it even more helpful, from a new desktop experience to deeper connections with your favourite apps.

On security, Google says Spark only touches the files you explicitly grant it permission to use — a sensible guardrail for anything rummaging through your desktop.

How remote task execution will work

Remote task execution is coming soon, not live yet — so hold the excitement for now. The idea is that you assign a multi-step job to Spark from your phone while you’re away, and it runs on your Mac. Google’s example: find a specific sales report on the Mac, pull the total revenue figure, and email it to you.

It’s the kind of feature that sounds handy in a demo and needs proving in daily use. Google hasn’t given a date beyond “coming soon,” so treat it as a promise rather than a shipping capability.

Which apps Gemini Spark now connects to

Spark’s connected-apps list has grown to cover Google Tasks, Google Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals. With Keep and Tasks, you can ask it to scan your scattered notes and turn them into action items. The rest cover designing flyers in Canva, sharing files via Dropbox, booking a table on OpenTable, ordering groceries on Instacart or arranging an apartment viewing on Zillow Rentals.

A note for UAE readers: Instacart and Zillow Rentals are US services with no local presence, so those two integrations won’t mean much here. Canva, Dropbox and OpenTable have wider reach, but you’ll want to check what works in the region.

These connected apps are rolling out over the next week on web and mobile, with the macOS app getting them in the coming weeks. Google is also adding support for custom Model Context Protocol (MCP), which lets you wire your own preferred apps directly into Spark to build a more tailored assistant — useful if the pre-built list doesn’t cover your tools.

How real-time topic tracking works

Spark can now watch topics and react to events as they happen, rather than waiting for you to ask. Google’s examples: match highlights and analysis the moment your football team finishes playing, or a detailed financial report the instant a stock crosses a threshold you set.

The full list of what it can monitor covers blogs, news sites, social media, finance, shopping, weather and sports, on top of your email. The pitch is that you stop constantly hitting refresh — reasonable enough, provided the alerts land when they’re supposed to.

macOS beta versus web and mobile

The two tracks of this update land at different speeds and in different places. The macOS beta is the US-only, Ultra-subscriber version with desktop automation; the web and mobile update carries the connected apps, real-time tracking and MCP support to a wider audience.
