The director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has confirmed the trilogy’s story ends inside the base game — and that any DLC would be a spin-off, not a cliffhanger epilogue sold separately.
In an interview with Automaton, Naoki Hamaguchi was asked whether Revelation might finish on a cliffhanger resolved in paid story content — a question with a recent paper trail. Last month an Epic Games Store database listing surfaced a “Story Expansion Pass” alongside Premium editions and a row of numbered DLC entries, which we covered at the time.
Hamaguchi’s answer was unambiguous.
“The story will be concluded within the main game,” he said. “We’re serious about concluding the series with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and we’re proceeding with development with that goal in mind.”
The ending, in other words, is in the box. Whether that ending matches the 1997 original, or the film sequel Advent Children, or neither, he is not saying.
On DLC itself he was more guarded. He senses that the media and the fan community are expecting it — “it feels like fans don’t want it to end yet” — but “things haven’t crystallized yet”. If there is genuine demand, he said, the team would consider it, and the shape is clear: a spin-off focused on a single character’s untold story, “kind of like what we did with Yuffie” in Episode Intermission, the expansion that shipped with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade in 2021.
The precedent cuts both ways. Remake got its Yuffie story; Rebirth got nothing, because Hamaguchi judged that fans had waited long enough and his job was “to deliver the third entry to fans as quickly as possible at a level of polish they would find satisfying”. That is the same logic now being applied to the finale: the main story ships complete, and anything else is extra.
For anyone who has carried a save file through two games, it is also the reassurance that the leaked Story Expansion Pass — if it exists at all — is not the real ending hiding behind a paywall. Character spin-offs are optional; the conclusion is not.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation arrives in spring 2027, simultaneously on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox PC — a launch window and platform spread we covered at the announcement. As with Remake Intergrade and Rebirth, it will be available in the UAE through the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Steam at launch.

Will Final Fantasy 7 Revelation end the story? Yes. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has said the story “will be concluded within the main game” and that the team is developing with that goal in mind, ruling out a cliffhanger resolved in DLC.
Will Revelation get story DLC? Nothing is confirmed. Hamaguchi says a decision “hasn’t crystallized yet” and would depend on fan demand; if DLC happens, it would be a character-focused spin-off like Yuffie’s Episode Intermission, not an extra final chapter.
When does Final Fantasy 7 Revelation release? Spring 2027, simultaneously on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox PC).
