French studio Sandfall Interactive has been awarded Knight status under the prestigious Order of Arts and Letters by France’s Ministry of Culture for their game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, according to IGN’s report. The honour makes them the first entire development team to receive this distinction, which recognises just 200 people worldwide each year for outstanding cultural contributions.
A rare honour for video games
The French Order of Arts and Letters represents one of France’s highest cultural distinctions, typically reserved for exceptional contributions to art and culture. While similar to a British knighthood in prestige, recipients cannot add “Sir” to their names but gain recognition as Knights of Arts and Letters.
“From Expeditioners to Knights!” Sandfall Interactive wrote in their LinkedIn announcement. “We were received yesterday at the Ministry of Culture to celebrate our game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. As such, the members of Sandfall Interactive were awarded the Order of Arts and Letters. This distinction honors us, and our deepest thanks go especially to our team who shaped this world and to the millions of players who have brought it to life.”
Joining gaming’s elite
Recognition from France’s Ministry of Culture for video game work remains exceptionally rare. The first game creator to receive Knight status was Michel Ancel, creator of Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil, who was honoured in 2006 alongside Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto and Alone in the Dark creator Frederick Raynal. More recently, veteran Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma received similar recognition in 2023.
However, Sandfall Interactive’s recognition marks the first time an entire studio has been collectively honoured with this distinction, highlighting the collaborative nature of modern game development and the cultural impact of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Critical and commercial acclaim
Since launching in April 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has achieved remarkable success both critically and commercially. The RPG earned a record-breaking nine victories from 13 nominations at The Game Awards 2025, where it dominated multiple categories including Game of the Year.
IGN crowned the game as their Game of 2025, praising it as a “modern RPG classic” that “paints itself into the pantheon of great RPGs with a brilliant combat system and a gripping, harrowing story.” The game’s success continues with nominations at the upcoming D.I.C.E. Awards 2026.
Cultural significance for gaming
The French Ministry’s recognition represents a significant moment for the video game industry’s cultural legitimacy. As games increasingly gain acceptance as an art form alongside cinema and literature, honours like the Order of Arts and Letters validate the medium’s cultural contributions on a national level.
“We hope that our journey will inspire all those who wish to take the plunge and create their own work,” Sandfall Interactive added in their announcement, emphasising the award’s potential to encourage future creators in the medium.
