Nvidia plans to bring DLSS 5 RTX 40 support to GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards after it finishes optimising the technology for the newer RTX 50 range, giving owners of the previous generation a path to the company’s neural-rendering feature.
The company confirmed the plan to The Verge, which reports that DLSS 5 will launch first on RTX 50 GPUs but is now intended for RTX 40-series cards as well. Nvidia says the expansion will follow further RTX 50 performance tuning later this autumn, so there is no RTX 40 release date yet.

DLSS 5 RTX 40 support has no release date yet
DLSS 5 debuted in NBA 2K27 on September 3 for GeForce RTX 50 desktop and laptop GPUs, alongside GeForce NOW. Nvidia’s current statement puts RTX 40 support after the RTX 50 optimisation work, rather than alongside the initial release.
Owners of RTX 20- and 30-series cards should not assume they are next in line. When The Verge asked about those older GPUs, Nvidia said it was taking “one step at a time” and kept its focus on the RTX 50 series.
The planned expansion also does not confirm support for every game previously shown with DLSS 5. Nvidia told The Verge that more titles are in development, but it did not re-confirm the earlier list, which included Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield and Resident Evil Requiem.
Players get a toggle, developers get the sliders
Nvidia says gamers will see DLSS 5 as a simple on/off setting. Developers can access more detailed controls, including model selection, Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity, automatic masking and per-pixel masking.

Studios can expose some of those controls through their own graphics menus, but Nvidia is not promising a universal set of sliders. That leaves the final look of DLSS 5 in each game largely in the developer’s hands.
For RTX 40 owners, the immediate answer is therefore a planned upgrade with an unknown arrival date. The hardware support is coming; the timetable is not.

Will DLSS 5 work on RTX 40-series GPUs?
Nvidia says it plans to expand official DLSS 5 support to GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs after further RTX 50 optimisation work.
When will DLSS 5 arrive on RTX 40?
There is no confirmed release date. Nvidia says RTX 40 support will follow its work on RTX 50 performance, expected later this autumn.
Can gamers adjust DLSS 5’s individual rendering controls?
Nvidia says gamers get a simple on/off toggle. Detailed controls such as model selection and masking are intended for developers, although studios may expose some options in their own menus.
