Xbox disc to digital is doing more than Microsoft’s announcement promised: community testing shows the feature can create digital entitlements for some delisted games, including Deadpool, Rock Band 4 and Minecraft: Story Mode.
Xbox disc to digital is reviving delisted games
Microsoft announced the feature on Xbox Wire for Xbox Insiders on August 26, with testing beginning on August 31. Insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc, launch the game, and the console can add a digital entitlement to the player’s account.
The company says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature. Once claimed, a game can use digital features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported, while the physical disc continues to work as before.
Microsoft says the programme starts with thousands of titles and will expand over time. It has not published a complete list, and the company has not confirmed that delisted-game compatibility is an intentional part of the rollout.
Which delisted Xbox games work?
The list is being built through player testing rather than a Microsoft database. PCMag reports that Deadpool, Rock Band 4 and Minecraft: Story Mode are among the games that work. Other reported examples include Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, F1 2021, Titanfall and G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout.
Insider Gaming’s running list contains 174 reported compatible games, although compatibility can change as Microsoft adjusts the programme. GamesRadar also reports that Deadpool, Rock Band 4 and Transformers: Devastation work, while Dead Rising 3, Destiny, Ryse: Son of Rome, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Titanfall failed in some tests.
The results are useful for preservation, but a successful test is not the same as a permanent promise. Owners still need a compatible physical disc, an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and a title that Microsoft’s entitlement system accepts.
The feature follows Xbox’s earlier disc-to-digital announcement and arrives as Sony’s physical-games plans face scrutiny. For now, Xbox owners with a shelf full of discontinued games have a reason to check the discs before assuming the storefront has the final word.
