Once claimed, the game picks up the usual digital extras where supported: Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The physical disc keeps working exactly as it always has.
Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature. Xbox is starting with thousands of titles and will add more over time, with not every game available at launch.
Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox, described it as part of the company’s preservation commitment.

Xbox Insiders begin testing next week on August 31.
The feature arrives as the industry keeps nudging games off shelves. Sony is winding down physical PlayStation disc production, Take-Two’s boss recently called GTA 6 discs “don’t really make sense for the consumer”, and digital-only releases keep drawing a “no disc, no buy” chorus. Xbox’s answer is to keep the disc and bolt the digital copy on.
It also offers an early read on the next Xbox. Rumours have the console going disc-free, and a disc-to-digital system — previously reported by The Verge in July — would be the bridge for the shelves of discs already sitting in people’s homes, rather like Sony’s own disc exit had no such bridge to offer.
