Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has defended GTA 6’s disc-free launch, saying discs “don’t really make sense for the consumer”. Rockstar’s parent company is now “well over 90%” digital, he told investors in a Q&A spotted by IGN.
“Our business is well over 90% digitally distributed. It’s already a digital business. So in certain instances, especially if it’s a big game, discs just — and note I said discs — don’t really make sense for the consumer. Also, most instances you have to register online to play anyhow. So if you’re already connected, who cares if you download digitally? It’s all the same and it’s much more convenient.”
The registration point is hard to argue with: most big games require an online account regardless, so the disc’s traditional selling point — installing offline — has mostly evaporated. Zelnick’s broader claim is that physical games are heading the way of vinyl: still produced, but no longer the default.
“It doesn’t mean that we won’t have physical additions now and then, I’m sure we will in the same way that there’s still vinyl in the recorded music business.”
Why GTA 6 ships without a disc
Rockstar confirmed in June that the launch version of GTA 6 will not ship on disc — the physical box contains a download code. It follows Sony’s announcement that PS5 disc production ends for new games in January 2028, with PS5 boxes now carrying warning labels about the change.
The industry data is on his side: Sony reported that 78% of full-game sales were digital in its last business year, and Circana data shows 27% of PS5 consoles sold in the US have no disc drive. Take-Two is forecasting $8 billion in bookings for the year GTA 6 launches.
GTA 6 price in the UAE and pre-orders
The standard edition costs $79.99 (about AED 295) and the Ultimate Edition $99.99 (about AED 370), per Khaleej Times — the UAE PlayStation Store lists the same prices in dollars. Pre-orders are open, and UAE retailers like Virgin Megastore, Jumbo, Geekay and Amazon UAE will carry the physical version, which is a box with a code inside.
The game launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with pre-loading from November 12. An extended look at the game premieres on Netflix on August 27.
Is GTA 6 available on disc?
No. The launch version of GTA 6 is digital-only: the physical box sold at retailers contains a download code rather than a disc. Take-Two has not announced a later disc release.
Why is GTA 6 digital-only?
Take-Two says its business is more than 90% digital and that discs “don’t really make sense” for big games, particularly when most require an online connection anyway. Digital-only also cuts manufacturing costs and removes the risk of discs leaking early.
