Speaking to The Washington Post, Druckmann said he was not involved in shaping the season’s creative direction, and that Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in it. He also said he could not speak personally about how production is progressing.
That is a change from the first two seasons. Druckmann co-wrote episodes of the HBO adaptation and directed two, while Naughty Dog had a creative role in the earlier seasons. GameSpot’s report confirms that the studio’s involvement is different this time.
The change applies to the television adaptation, not necessarily to the games. The Last of Us Season 3 may be the end of HBO’s version, but it does not close the door on Naughty Dog’s own plans.
What Naughty Dog’s next projects could be
Druckmann described Naughty Dog as the steward of the franchise and said, “We’re not done with The Last of Us.” He added that there are a couple of projects in the works that he is excited to discuss when the time is right.
That does not confirm The Last of Us Part 3. The projects could involve a new single-player game, another story in the same universe or an idea that has not been announced. The cancelled The Last of Us Online project is not confirmed to be returning either.
Naughty Dog’s announced next game remains Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which has no release window. The studio has also said it is working on more than one new game, leaving the second project unidentified.
