Apple and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have released a six-step guide to help families build healthier digital habits, pairing child-development advice with Apple’s parental controls. The Apple family media guide is called “Building Healthy Digital Habits: A Guide for Families” and starts with a conversation about screen time, not a preset daily cap. It follows Apple’s iOS 27 parental controls, with advice on how families can use the settings together.

The six steps cover talking with children, setting up a Child Account, choosing website and app safety settings, scheduling device use, managing contacts and revisiting the plan as children grow. The Apple announcement says the AAP’s guidance has been tailored to Apple’s parental controls. The guide itself explains how to use the tools.

Apple family media guide is a family plan, not a screen-time cap

The AAP’s age-based guidance spans infants to teens, but the Apple family media guide does not prescribe one screen-time limit for every child. It asks families to balance device use with sleep, schoolwork, exercise and time with other people.

That approach also appears in the AAP’s broader media recommendations, which ask families to consider the child, the content, self-regulation, what media displaces and communication.

“Our hope is that this guide helps facilitate easier discussions and gives families the resources they need to put this guidance into practice.”

Sumbul Desai, Apple’s vice president of Health and Fitness

Desai described the tools as a starting point families can adapt as their children grow. The guide’s main emphasis is a shared plan, with Screen Time controls helping put that plan into practice.

Which Apple devices need the Screen Time update?

Apple says the Screen Time update is available with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. To use it, every product in a Family Sharing group must be updated to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. Apple cautions that some features may vary by region, language or device model, so UAE families should check Apple’s regional site.

The guide follows the launch of Apple’s child-safety features, according to 9to5Mac. For another example of platform-level parental controls, Meta’s AI supervision tools show parents topic categories from teens’ conversations with its assistant.

What does setting up a Child Account do?

A Child Account created through Family Sharing enables age-based safeguards and parental controls, while keeping the child’s personal information separate from the parent’s account.

Can families use the guide without Apple devices?

The advice about family conversations and balancing screen use can apply to any household, but Child Accounts, Screen Time, Family Sharing and Apple’s website and contact controls require supported Apple devices.
