Garmin has replaced its Edge 1050 flagship with the Edge 1060, a cycling computer with a built-in microphone that lets riders control it by voice. In its press release, Garmin lists it at $799.99 in the US. Notebookcheck reports £699 in the UK and €799 in the Eurozone, with sales starting on 23 October.

What the microphone does

Riders activate voice control by saying “Okay, Garmin”, then give commands such as asking for heart rate data or reporting road hazards. Garmin’s examples include “Report a pothole” and “Route me to the closest coffee shop”, and the Edge responds by changing the screen, reading out stats or suggesting routes. Paired with a smartphone, the Garmin Messenger app lets you send voice messages and hear incoming ones through the speaker. The same speaker also plays navigation prompts and works as a digital bike bell. Garmin’s demo video shows the commands in use.

The voice hardware comes with a routing update. Route Options shows different paths to a destination based on ride time, elevation, and bike type, while Route Previews show distance, estimated ride time, traffic, and reported hazards. Garmin also adds road closure alerts reported by other Garmin riders, a Free Flow Routing mode that looks for fewer stops and junctions, and an “Up Ahead” view of nearby coffee shops, toilets or fuel stops. BikeRadar notes that route previews need a connected phone with data or Wi-Fi.

Smaller, lighter, same screen and battery

Most of the hardware carries over from the Edge 1050. According to Notebookcheck, the 1060 is smaller and lighter, but keeps the 3.5-inch, 480 x 800 display, an IPX7 rating and up to 60 hours of battery life. Garmin’s release says the battery lasts up to 20 hours in the most demanding use and up to 60 hours in battery saver mode. Reverse charging is new, so the Edge can top up a Varia light, a phone or another device.

Price and availability

Garmin’s release calls the Edge 1060 available now at $799.99, while Notebookcheck reports that US orders open on 23 October. BikeRadar lists £699.99 and €799.99 and says the UK and European models are on sale now. The US price is $100 above the Edge 1050’s launch price of $699.99 in June 2024. Garmin launched the Edge Explore 3 and Explore 3 Plus alongside it. The Plus adds a microphone and voice control at a lower price. BikeRadar lists the Explore 3 from £349.99 and the Plus at £429.99.

For readers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, we haven’t found a confirmed local price or release date for the Edge 1060. The figures above are for the US, UK and Eurozone only.

Is the Garmin Edge 1060 available in the UAE or Saudi Arabia?

Garmin hasn’t confirmed regional pricing or a date in the material we’ve seen. Check Garmin’s regional site or your local authorised retailer before ordering, and treat US and UK prices as a guide only.

Do I need a phone to use the voice features?

According to Garmin, sending and receiving voice messages through Garmin Messenger needs a connected smartphone. Voice commands for ride stats and screen changes are built into the device, but Garmin’s release doesn’t say whether every command works without a phone connection.

What do Edge 1050 owners gain by upgrading?

The Edge 1060 adds the microphone and voice control, Messenger voice messages, reverse charging and the new routing tools. It is also 19 g lighter and slightly smaller. The display size and battery ratings are unchanged.
