Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo is coming with iOS 27.2, and 9to5Mac reports the public release is due next week. That’s a lot sooner than the “later this year” Apple gave when it unveiled the foldable on 9 September, when it said the Duo would support Apple Pencil with USB-C on either display. In the UAE, pre-orders opened at 4pm local time on 16 October, with availability beginning on 23 October, so early buyers will have the phone before the software that enables the stylus.
What’s confirmed, and where it comes from
Apple hasn’t announced the iOS 27.2 date or the Pencil feature. The evidence is a post on X from Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach, who said support works in the iOS 27.2 release candidate that rolled out on Monday. MacRumors reports that Weinbach confirmed Pencil support was enabled on his iPhone Duo once he installed the release candidate.
MacRumors says the USB-C Pencil can draw, annotate and scroll within supported apps on both the inner and outer displays. The timing surprised people because, as 9to5Mac points out, Apple’s habit of shipping noteworthy software updates in December led many to assume Duo owners would wait until then.
What it means for launch week in the UAE
If your order arrives on Friday 23 October, expect a gap of a few days. 9to5Mac says iOS 27.2 is expected on or around Monday, 26 October, which means a Duo unboxed at the weekend won’t recognise a Pencil until that update lands. Anyone who orders from now on should find the feature ready by the time their phone turns up.
The Duo also needs an update at setup, because it ships on an older iOS 27.1 build. We recommend checking Settings > General > Software Update on Monday, since that’s when iOS 27.2 should appear if Apple holds to the timeline reported so far. Users already on the iOS 27.2 release candidate will get Pencil support on day one.
Only one Pencil works
According to 9to5Mac, the Duo works only with the Apple Pencil (USB-C), and no other Pencil models are compatible. That rules out an Apple Pencil Pro or the older models you may already own for an iPad. Apple UAE’s store lists the Apple Pencil (USB-C) at AED 319 and the Apple Pencil Pro at AED 529.
Engadget reports that pairing and charging on the Duo requires plugging the Pencil in with a USB-C cable. If you already use the USB-C model with an iPad, you won’t need to buy another stylus, since the same Pencil carries over.
Apple has separately asked owners to hold it accountable on crease durability, so the Duo’s first weeks with real owners will cover hardware as well as software.
When can I use Apple Pencil on my iPhone Duo in the UAE?
The Duo is available from 23 October, and Apple Pencil support should arrive with the public iOS 27.2 release, which 9to5Mac expects on or around 26 October. Apple hasn’t confirmed that date.
Will my Apple Pencil Pro work with the iPhone Duo?
No. Only the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is compatible, and Apple UAE lists it at AED 319. It pairs and charges over a USB-C cable.
Do I need the iOS 27.2 release candidate to use the Pencil?
No. The release candidate is only a way to get the feature early. According to 9to5Mac, waiting for the public iOS 27.2 update gives you the same support a few days later.
