Samsung is reportedly developing a rollable-screen smartphone aimed at a launch in the first half of 2028, with its own display arm lined up to supply the panels. The claim comes from a Korean media report citing an unnamed Samsung Electronics executive, so treat it as a credible rumour rather than anything official. If it holds, the device would arrive in the tenth anniversary year of Samsung’s foldable lineup — and finally move the company past the fold.

As reported by SamMobile, citing a Money Today report, Samsung Display is in advanced discussions to supply rollable OLED panels to the Samsung MX (Mobile eXperience) division for the phone. That is the same playbook Samsung used with foldables: build the panel in-house, then put it in a Galaxy. It already sells multi-fold form factors in the UAE, so a rollable would slot into a lineup that already pushes the boundaries of what a phone is.

When will Samsung release a rollable phone?

That is the headline date, and it is worth holding loosely — a 2028 target gives Samsung almost two years of runway, and product plans that far out shift constantly. What specs are expected?

Market research firm Omdia expects the device to use a 10-inch OLED panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 440ppi. Those are analyst predictions, not confirmed specs — but they sketch a clear picture. A 10-inch screen in a phone-sized body that rolls out to tablet proportions is squarely aimed at video and productivity, the same buyers who already gravitate to big foldables.

Beyond the display, nothing is known. No processor, no battery, no camera details, and no explanation of how Samsung’s rollable mechanism works. The 16:9 ratio is the interesting tell — it is a video-first shape, not the squarer formats foldables tend to favour.

How a rollable differs from a foldable

A rollable extends its screen by unrolling instead of folding along a crease. That is the pitch: more screen with no fold line running down the middle, a complaint that has dogged foldables since the first multi-panel Galaxy devices. Samsung has only ever shipped foldable OLED in its phones, so this would be a genuine first for the company.

The catch is that nobody has made a rollable phone work at scale yet. Folding hinges are now mature; rolling mechanisms add a different set of durability and reliability questions. A 2028 target suggests Samsung knows those problems are not solved overnight.

Why Samsung is betting on rollables
