Apple’s first foldable has taken an early battering from the internet’s best-known phone destroyer. Dexerto reports that YouTuber Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything failed the iPhone Duo, saying it “does not survive” his durability test. Dust left the hinge unable to close, and a bend test permanently damaged the inner display. Nelson published the video, titled “iPhone Duo Durability: Destroyed”, on 23 October, the day the phone went on sale in the UAE.
Scratches, dust and a stuck hinge
The test started well for the outside of the phone. Dexerto reports that the outer display showed only faint scratches at level seven on the Mohs hardness scale. The 7.6-inch flexible inner screen fared worse: it scratched at level two, and fingernails left deeper marks. Nelson did credit Apple’s matte coating for making those blemishes far less visible with the display switched on, though the marks themselves are permanent.
The dust test caused the first functional failure. Apple rates the Duo IP68 for dust and water resistance, but Nelson found that particles appeared to work their way into the hinge and stop the phone closing completely. He explained that the magnets holding the halves shut could no longer overcome the debris, and said “The dusty Duo is damaged.”
TechEBlog describes the dust as sand and mud, and says Nelson has seen Samsung’s foldables keep their hinges cleaner under similar conditions. That comparison is useful context if you’re weighing the Duo against the Galaxy Z Fold8 in the UAE, though it comes from TechEBlog’s account of the video rather than a head-to-head test.
The bend test and the repair bill
The bend test did the most damage. Dexerto says it produced a permanent green line across the inner display, and a second attempt added two more. Nelson concluded that the hinge allowed enough movement to harm the flexible screen. By the end of the session the panel was completely unresponsive, and Nelson pointed to the $1,000 cost of replacing it.
Nelson himself leaves some questions open. He couldn’t tell whether the dust trapped in the hinge contributed to the failure or whether the hinge simply isn’t rigid enough. Dexerto notes the test pushes the phone beyond normal everyday use, and Nelson warned against putting pressure on the Duo while it’s unfolded. The video’s description also teases a stunt on the nano-texture inner screen, asking viewers whether they’d peel it off their own Duo. Nelson’s answer there is that they probably shouldn’t.
What it means in the UAE
The Duo starts at AED 8,499 in the UAE, against $1,999 in the US, and it was in Apple’s first wave of countries. That makes the dust result the one most relevant here, since fine sand and grit are hard to avoid. The $1,000 replacement figure is a US-dollar number. We haven’t found a UAE price for an inner display repair.
Durability was already the open question around this phone. Apple has asked owners to hold it accountable on crease durability, and our look at the hinge’s role in cooling found durability data was still missing. Nelson’s video is one of the first public stress tests of that hinge. CEO John Ternus has already called early foldables “cheap and crappy” ahead of the Duo’s pre-orders, so buyers will expect Apple’s version to hold up better. Apple hasn’t commented on the test that we’ve seen.
Does the iPhone Duo’s IP68 rating mean it’s safe around sand?
Not in Nelson’s test. Apple rates the phone IP68 for dust and water resistance, but particles got into the hinge and left it unable to close fully. We’d keep it out of sand and dust, and wipe it down if it does get dirty.
How much does the iPhone Duo cost in the UAE?
Our UAE price and specs page lists it from AED 8,499, with sales starting on 23 October. The Apple UAE price round-up covers the cases and the rest of the range.
Is JerryRigEverything’s bend test realistic?
No. Dexerto says it goes beyond normal use, and Nelson warns against pressing on the phone while it’s unfolded. The dust and fingernail results are closer to everyday conditions.
