James Gunn has shut down the Jensen Ackles Batman casting rumour, saying DC Studios has not cast the actor in any role. The co-CEO replied on Threads after fans linked Ackles’ recent Instagram follow to speculation he could play the DCU’s Batman. IGN reported the exchange, and Gunn’s response is on Threads.
“Thanks for letting me know. I’m going to follow him back. I met him once 20 years ago when he was dating a friend of mine. Nice guy. We haven’t cast him as anything.”

Jensen Ackles Batman casting speculation started with an Instagram follow
The rumour gathered pace after fans noticed Ackles had followed Gunn on Instagram. IGN and CBR both trace the claim to that social-media activity. Gunn’s reply says he had met Ackles once, around two decades ago, and intended to follow him back; it does not describe any casting conversation.
Ackles has been a regular fan pick for the DCU’s Batman and has previously spoken about wanting to play the role. He has also voiced Batman in DC animation, including the Tomorrowverse films, as ScreenRant has reported. That history helps explain the attention around a follow, but does not add evidence of a live-action casting deal.
What James Gunn’s answer does — and does not — confirm
The direct update is limited to Ackles: DC Studios has not cast him in any role. Gunn did not say the actor could never join the DCU, but his answer is not a hint that an offer or discussion is under way. Any future possibility remains open; it is not established by this exchange.
The reply also does not name the actor who will play the DCU’s Batman. Tbreak recently covered Alan Ritchson’s Batman speculation, after he said his conversations with DC concerned another character. That is a separate casting story, not confirmation of who will wear the cowl.
Does Gunn’s comment rule out Ackles playing Batman in future?
No. Gunn said Ackles had not been cast in any role; he did not say DC would never cast him. Gunn’s Threads reply
Has Jensen Ackles played Batman before?
He has voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman in DC animation, including the Tomorrowverse films, according to ScreenRant. That is separate from playing the character in live action.
