Marvel has released a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, and it spends its time on two things: Thor leading the heroes into battle and the awkward maths of how many people have carried Captain America’s shield. IGN reports that the trailer dropped on Saturday, roughly 24 hours after a Major League Baseball crossover promo aired during the World Series.

The footage leans on the pairing of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who have both proved worthy of lifting the enchanted hammer Mjolnir. TBS News reports that it builds on July’s first full trailer, in which Thor made Rogers lift the hammer to prove who he was. Thor also appears to be the one running the team this time. IGN says he rallies the troops against Doctor Doom with the line: “Doom will tear this world apart. Team up and stand together.”

The joke that gives the trailer its headline comes from Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. In the scene, he pokes fun at the men in the room who have all been Captain America: Steve, Sam Wilson and USAgent. USAgent answers with “I was also Cap for a minute.” Comic Basics reports that a seven-second extended version of the exchange has since surfaced, showing Ant-Man talking to Wyatt Russell’s John Walker. In it, he calls Rogers “Cap”, then looks at Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, the current Captain America, and corrects himself.

It’s a self-aware gag for a studio that has spent years juggling who gets to wear the suit, and it fits the film’s crowded cast. The trailer follows news that Project Hail Mary star Sandra Hüller has joined Doomsday in an undisclosed role. IGN also notes David Harbour’s insistence that he didn’t spoil the film in a recent interview. Meanwhile, fans think they’ve worked out which character was cut from the first trailer, although Marvel hasn’t commented.

Evans’ return is the thread running through most of this campaign. We’ve already looked at how Marvel pitched him more than a dozen MCU comebacks, and this trailer shows what the studio does with him once he’s back: he stands next to Thor and the hammer, and Ant-Man teases the person who replaced him.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theatres on 18 December. Marvel hasn’t confirmed a UAE date or ticketing details for this trailer.
