The report says Apple and its suppliers are not dealing with a straightforward shortage of components. Instead, the company is asking for better production yields, including improved surface flatness and hinge performance, before the device moves fully into commercial production.
A supply-chain manager told Nikkei Asia, in a quote reproduced by MacRumors: “Production is ramping up slowly, with output currently at only a few hundred units a day in late August. That initial volume could be challenging to meet market demand.”
The additional verification process reportedly pushed commercial production back by several weeks. Apple and its suppliers are said to be working to increase output before distribution begins.

The production rate is a long way from the roughly 10 million units Nikkei had previously reported as Apple’s target for the year. The Free Press Journal also attributes the low early output to quality-control standards rather than a component shortage.
Apple is still expected to show the foldable alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its September 9 event. Reported specifications include a book-style design with a display of roughly 7.8 inches inside and 5.5 inches on the cover, although Apple has confirmed neither the product nor those specifications. Apple’s September event listing confirms the event but does not mention a foldable iPhone.
