tvOS 27.2 beta 2 adds the first visible version of Apple’s four-HomePod surround sound setup, allowing an Apple TV 4K to send audio wirelessly to two pairs of speakers. The feature is still a work in progress, with no way to assign front and rear roles properly.
tvOS 27.2 beta adds four-HomePod surround sound
The change was spotted in tvOS 27.2 beta 2 and reported by 9to5Mac, following earlier references found in HomePod software. The beta can send audio to four HomePods through the Home app: two full-size HomePods and two HomePod minis were shown in the reported setup.
That is a step beyond the current two-speaker arrangement. FlatpanelsHD’s report says Apple TV 4K can already use two HomePods for wireless audio, but the four-speaker mode is intended to extend that into a surround setup. The feature works with Dolby Atmos and surround sound from video sources.
The limitation is fairly large for something called surround sound. The beta does not yet let users assign speaker roles such as front-left, front-right, rear-left and rear-right. The four speakers therefore play the same audio from the front and rear rather than behaving like a properly mapped home-cinema system.
What the four-HomePod setup cannot do yet
Menu and game audio is restricted to the front speakers, according to the report. That makes the feature more useful for films and television than for playing games on Apple TV, at least in its current form. Beta software also means the behaviour can change before release, or disappear into the software cupboard entirely.
The feature follows earlier code discoveries reported by MacRumors, which pointed to room calibration, speaker-position mapping, timing adjustments and separate processing for movies and music. The tvOS 27.2 implementation is the first sign that Apple is moving beyond code references and testing the setup on Apple TV hardware.
This is a follow-up to Apple’s earlier four-HomePod surround-system report, which covered the audioOS references before the feature appeared in tvOS. Apple has not announced a public release date, and the beta does not confirm whether every HomePod model will support the final version. The feature also arrives as Apple TV hardware rumours continue, including reports about the next Apple TV 4K.
For existing Apple TV 4K owners, the idea is promising but not yet a reason to rearrange the living room. Four speakers that all behave like front speakers is a costly way to discover that the rear channels are still waiting for an update.
