Android Auto games are now generally available, with Google opening parked-only car gaming to developers through Google Play.

Google has moved Android Auto and Android Automotive OS game support from beta to general availability, allowing developers to publish parked-only games through Google Play. The change means Android Auto games can move through the open testing and production tracks rather than requiring the earlier limited approval process.

Android Auto games are built for parked downtime

Google says the games are intended for moments such as waiting at a charging station or collecting a curbside order. They cannot be played while the vehicle is moving, and developers need to make their games recognise the parked state. Controllers are supported on Android Auto and Android Automotive OS.

The Android Developers Blog says Android Auto games are supported on devices running Android 15 and higher. Developers also need to declare the game category and the relevant car platform in the app manifest. Android Auto and Android Automotive OS use separate declarations, so support for one does not automatically mean support for the other.

9to5Google reports that around 30 games are available on Android Auto today. That catalogue could grow now that developers can publish to Google’s open testing and production tracks. The current experience is aimed at short sessions rather than turning the dashboard into a very small living room.

What the rollout means for drivers and developers

For developers, the change removes the beta gate and opens a new screen and downtime use case. For drivers, the benefit is limited to when the car is stationary, but charging stops and curbside waits are exactly the sort of gaps Google is targeting.

The rollout sits alongside the wider growth of connected-car software. Lucid Gravity added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the UAE through a software update, while GM brought CarPlay back to the Silverado and Sierra after previously moving away from it. Neither development is a games announcement, but both show how much of the in-car experience is now being decided by software.

Google’s announcement includes the technical requirements for developers. 9to5Google’s report provides the current game-count estimate and additional context on how the feature works.

Can Android Auto games be played while driving?

No. Android Auto games are designed for parked use and must recognise the vehicle’s parked state before they can be played.

What do developers need to publish Android Auto games?

Developers need to declare the game category and car support in the app manifest, adapt the interface to different displays, and follow Google’s parked-use requirements.

Does every Android Automotive game work with Android Auto?

No. Google treats Android Auto and Android Automotive OS support as separate declarations, so a game may support one platform without supporting the other.
