2027 Silverado Sierra CarPlay is getting a less all-or-nothing role in General Motors’ redesigned truck interface. The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 will let Apple CarPlay and Android Auto sit inside a large contextual card while native GM controls remain available on the same screen, according to The Verge and CNBC.

The new picture-in-picture-style layout is designed to prevent phone projection from taking over the entire display. A driver can open CarPlay or Android Auto, then return to GM’s split-screen home view while keeping access to functions such as trailer information and off-road settings.

That is a change in direction for GM, which removed CarPlay and Android Auto from its newer electric vehicles while arguing that its own software could offer a better experience. The company later said it would not remove phone projection from existing petrol-powered vehicles overnight. The new truck interface instead tries to make both systems coexist.

GM is also redesigning the rest of the interface. The 2027 trucks will get new graphics for Super Cruise, animated transitions, simpler trailering menus and a notification panel for settings and connected devices. Some versions have more than 60 inches of combined display area across the driver cluster, central touchscreen and passenger screen.

What changes for Silverado and Sierra buyers?

The updated software is due to debut on new Silverado and Sierra trucks later in 2026. Existing owners will not receive the new interface, according to The Verge, so this is a model-year feature rather than a general software update for current trucks.

GM says it sells close to 900,000 Silverado and Sierra trucks a year. The rollout therefore gives the company a large customer base to test the system on, although the first version will still have to prove that adding more screen content makes driving simpler rather than busier.

Colin McCormick, GM’s product manager for phone projection, said the aim was for customers to avoid choosing between projection and the native system. UAE launch timing, specifications and pricing have not been announced in the sources.

For comparison, Lucid Gravity already supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the UAE, but GM’s approach is aimed at keeping its own truck-specific controls visible alongside the phone interface.
