Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro rebooting bug will be fixed by a software update arriving early next week. The problem affects some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users whose phones freeze and restart after a failed Face ID attempt.

9to5Mac reported that Apple confirmed the update directly, after the publication reproduced the problem on an iPhone 18 Pro. When Face ID fails during a protected action — such as opening the Passwords app — the phone can stop responding to touch input and hard-reboot a few seconds later. A panic log may then appear in the iPhone Analytics section of Settings.

iPhone 18 Pro rebooting bug is a software issue, not a hardware swap

The issue does not affect every phone, and Apple has not explained its underlying cause. The timing has raised questions because the iPhone 18 Pro line uses a redesigned Face ID system, with its infrared camera moved behind the display near the status-bar clock. That change also enables a 25% smaller visible Dynamic Island.

The company has not said whether the new sensor arrangement is directly responsible. Gizchina reports that tapping “Try Face ID Again” after an unsuccessful scan can trigger the freeze, although Apple has not published a complete list of affected actions or devices.

Some customers had already exchanged their phones through Apple, believing the problem was a hardware fault. The confirmed software fix means an exchange should not be necessary for this specific bug. Owners can wait for the update rather than treating a temporary software failure as a reason to start the setup process again.

Apple has not named the iOS 27 version that will carry the fix. The company has also not given a more precise release date than early next week. Once it arrives, affected owners should install it and test Face ID inside the app or workflow that previously caused the reboot.

For UAE buyers, the bug affects phones already covered by Apple’s local launch and support channels. Our iPhone 18 Pro UAE price and specifications guide covers the local models, while the iPhone 18 Pro review has the wider device context.

The iPhone 18 Pro rebooting bug is expected to be addressed without a hardware recall, but Apple’s update still needs to arrive and resolve the failure in practice.

Should iPhone 18 Pro owners replace their phones because of this bug?

Not for this specific failure. Apple says a software update is coming, so owners should install it before considering a hardware exchange unless the phone has another problem.

What should affected owners do before the update arrives?

Keep the phone updated, avoid repeatedly triggering the failed Face ID workflow, and use the device passcode for protected actions if Face ID causes another freeze.

Has Apple confirmed that the redesigned Face ID hardware caused the reboot?

No. Apple has confirmed the software fix but has not linked the fault to the infrared camera’s new position behind the display.
