Guild Wars 3 Officially Revealed, First Beta Test Coming in Fall 2027

ArenaNet has officially announced Guild Wars 3, confirming that the long-running MMORPG series will return with a new mainline entry more than a decade after the launch of Guild Wars 2.

The reveal took place during Summer Game Fest 2026, where ArenaNet debuted the first in-engine footage from the game and confirmed that its first beta test is scheduled to begin Fall 2027. Guild Wars 3 is being developed for PC and PS5, making it the first entry in the franchise to launch on a home console. It will also be available through Steam and directly from the developer.

Guild Wars 3 Takes Place 1,000 Years Before the Original Game

Rather than continuing directly from the events of Guild Wars 2, the next game will take players back more than a thousand years before the original Guild Wars.

The story is set in Orr, a Tyrian region depicted as a sprawling wilderness frontier filled with magic, spirits and competing guilds. Players will step into the role of a Vaelwarden, a member of a guild committed to protecting the land and the nature spirits connected to it.

The announcement trailer shows the player character travelling across the open world on a large wolf-like creature known as the Seeker. The Seeker serves as a connection to the spirits of Orr and will also function as a mount as players explore the environment. Smaller nature entities called Vael spirits will be spread across the world, with each one having a different level of influence on the surrounding ecosystem.

Movement and Momentum Will Play a Bigger Role in Combat

ArenaNet is also making traversal a central part of the experience. The reveal trailer shows the Vaelwarden riding across the open world, climbing cliffs and moving fluidly through different parts of the environment.

That sense of momentum will carry directly into combat. ArenaNet says the fighting system has been designed around positioning, movement and speed, allowing players to turn their momentum into additional damage and impact during encounters. The controls are being built from the outset to work with both keyboard and mouse setups and gamepads.

The initial reveal also points towards the return of the extensive character customisation and skill-building systems associated with the series. ArenaNet has not yet provided a detailed breakdown of classes, progression systems or multiplayer activities, although more information is expected later in 2026 and throughout 2027.

Guild Wars Is Coming to Consoles for the First Time

One of the biggest changes is the arrival of the franchise on PlayStation 5. The original Guild Wars launched on PC in 2005, while Guild Wars 2 followed in 2012. Neither game was previously released for consoles.
