GTA V’s PS5 Upgrade Is Now Free for Everyone Who Owns It on PS4

Rockstar is removing the current-gen upgrade fee ahead of GTA Online’s new Kortz Center Heist, which arrives across consoles and PC in July.

GTA V’s PS5 Upgrade Is Now Free for Everyone Who Owns It on PS4

Rockstar Games is finally giving existing GTA V owners a free route to the current-generation version of the game.

Beginning June 18, 2026, anyone who owns any version of GTA V on PS4 will be able to upgrade to the native PS5 edition at no additional cost. Players who own the digital Xbox One version will similarly be able to upgrade to the Xbox Series X/S editing for free.

It is a significant change for a game that first arrived on current-gen consoles in March 2022 as a separate release, requiring many existing players to purchase another copy if they wanted the enhanced version.

What does the GTA V PS5 upgrade include?

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions of GTA V include several technical improvements over the previous-generation versions.

These include graphics modes offering up to 4K resolution and 60fps gameplay, HDR support, ray-tracing features, upgraded textures and draw distances, and considerably faster loading.

The PS5 edition also supports DualSense features such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, while both current-generation versions offer improved audio and access to GTA Online features that are unavailable on PS4 and Xbox One.

Players can migrate their GTA V Story Mode save and GTA Online character and progression to the newer version, allowing them to continue from where they left off rather than starting again.

Rockstar has not described the offer as temporary, so the free upgrade appears to be a permanent entitlement for eligible owners.

Xbox players also get a free current-gen upgrade

The offer is not limited to PlayStation. Anyone who owns the digital Xbox One version of GTA V will be able to claim the Xbox Series X|S version at no additional cost.

Rockstar’s wording specifically refers to the digital Xbox One edition, whereas it says that owners of “any PS4 version” are eligible on PlayStation.

The free upgrades arrive more than four years after the enhanced console editions were released and should make it easier for remaining PS4 and Xbox One players to move their GTA Online characters onto newer hardware.

GTA Online’s Kortz Center Heist arrives in July

Rockstar announced the upgrade alongside the first details of GTA Online’s next major update, The Kortz Center Heist.

Launching in July, the multi-stage operation will task players with stealing valuable artwork from the Kortz Center, the large museum and cultural complex overlooking Los Santos from Pacific Bluffs.

Players will first need to add an Art Studio to their Mansion, which will support their new ventures in art theft and counterfeiting. From there, they will scope out the Kortz Center, select an approach and prepare to infiltrate and escape from the sprawling property.

Rockstar has not yet revealed the available approaches, potential payout, player count or an exact release date.

The Kortz Center Heist will be released for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC in July 2026, meaning players who remain on previous-generation consoles will not be excluded from the update.
