Industry analysts believe Rockstar Games’ decision to release GTA 6 without a disc is unlikely to have a meaningful effect on sales, with the strength of the franchise expected to outweigh complaints from players who prefer physical media.
Rockstar recently confirmed that boxed copies of GTA 6 will contain a digital download code rather than a game disc. While the decision has drawn criticism from physical collectors and players concerned about ownership, analysts speaking to VGC expect most consumers to accept it.
GTA 6 Is Expected to Sell Regardless
Chris Dring of The Game Business said the move would understandably frustrate some players and could create difficulties for consumers who are less comfortable with digital downloads. However, he does not expect it to matter to most of the game’s potential audience.
“Ultimately, people will accept it. It’s GTA,” Dring said.
The decision could also give Rockstar additional time to work on the game before release. Traditional disc production requires a finished build to be prepared, duplicated and distributed to retailers well ahead of launch, while a digital release can be updated closer to the release date.
Avoiding discs could also reduce the risk of copies reaching players early and leaking gameplay or story details before launch. At the same time, a download code cannot be resold once it has been redeemed, effectively removing GTA 6 from the traditional pre-owned market.
Retailers Could Be the Biggest Losers
Dring argued that physical game retailers, second-hand shops and resale platforms would be the groups most negatively affected by the decision.
Stores can still sell GTA 6’s boxed editions, but they will not be able to generate further revenue by buying and reselling used copies. Retailers may instead need to rely more heavily on console hardware, accessories and other GTA-related products.
However, Circana senior director and video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella offered a slightly different perspective. He suggested that putting a download code inside the box could expand the number of customers able to purchase GTA 6 from a physical retailer.
According to Circana’s US retail tracking data, 52% of Xbox Series consoles and 27% of PlayStation 5 consoles sold as of the end of May 2026 did not include a disc drive. A code-in-a-box release can be used with these digital-only systems, whereas a traditional disc version would exclude their owners.
That could allow retailers to compete for sales that may otherwise have gone directly through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.
Physical Collectors Still Lose a Purchase Option
Despite the potential retail benefits, Piscatella acknowledged that some players still want the game stored on physical media. A boxed copy containing a download code does not offer the same ownership, preservation or resale benefits as a conventional disc.
He nevertheless expects the overall effect on GTA 6’s sales to be limited. Digital distribution already accounts for a major part of the PlayStation and Xbox markets, with Xbox Series consoles particularly weighted towards digital purchases.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Standard Edition is priced at $80, while the $100 Ultimate Edition includes additional in-game vehicles, weapons, outfits and other bonuses.
Pre-loading will begin on November 12, giving players time to download the game before launch. Rockstar has not announced whether a version containing an actual disc will be released at a later date.
