Rockstar Games has confirmed that physical editions of GTA 6 will not contain a game disc. Instead, customers buying the game from a retailer will receive a box copy containing a digital download code.
The packaging will therefore give buyers something to place on a shelf, but the game itself must still be redeemed and downloaded through the relevant console storefront. GTA 6 is currently confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
It is an unusual definition of a physical release, particularly for players who purchase discs so they can lend, trade or resell their games. Once the included code has been redeemed, the box will no longer function like a conventional physical copy that can be passed onto another player. Rockstar wants you to buy their games – no lending!
GTA 6 Will Still Be Available From Retailers
The decision does not mean GTA 6 will be limited entirely to the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. Rockstar still plans to sell boxed editions through selected retailers, with pre-orders opening on June 25.
Earlier reports had suggested that the physical release could be delayed in an effort to prevent copies from reaching players before launch. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick subsequently dismissed those claims, saying that delaying the physical version was not the plan.
The code-in-a-box approach allows Rockstar to maintain a retail release without distributing playable discs. However, the company has not provided a specific reason for choosing this format.
GTA 6 Preloading Begins on November 12
Rockstar says customers who pre-order either the digital or boxed version will be able to begin preloading GTA 6 on November 12, one week before its release.
The company has not yet explained exactly how download codes for retail pre-orders will be delivered in time for the preload period. This may depend on the retailer and whether codes are provided electronically or with the physical packaging.
