Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 honours Vince Zampella with a dedicated memorial screen in its credits. VGC reports that the tribute reads “In memoriam – Vince Zampella”, recognising the late Call of Duty co-creator and Infinity Ward co-founder. It brings his name back to the series he helped establish, more than 15 years after his last entry with the studio.

VGC credits The Game Awards founder Geoff Keighley’s post on X with drawing attention to the dedication. The screen is a brief acknowledgement rather than a retrospective, but its placement connects the latest Modern Warfare to the developer who led Infinity Ward during the original games. For players who know Zampella through Titanfall, Apex Legends, or Battlefield, it also points back to an earlier part of his career.

From Allied Assault to Modern Warfare

Before Call of Duty, Zampella was lead designer on EA’s Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. He then co-founded Infinity Ward with Grant Collier and Jason West, signing a publishing agreement with Activision to build a competing first-person shooter. That project became Call of Duty, beginning a run of games that would make the studio central to Activision’s biggest shooter franchise.

Zampella led Infinity Ward through the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2, released in 2009. The dedication therefore reaches beyond his role in founding the company: he helped lead the games that established the Modern Warfare name. The current series has since expanded in different directions, including a Modern Warfare 4 beta that added campaign and Warzone content, but the memorial acknowledges that earlier foundation.

The connection survived a bitter professional split. Following a dispute with Activision, Zampella and West were fired and went on to found Respawn Entertainment in 2010. Game Rant’s account of the tribute also traces that departure and the legal dispute that followed, placing the dedication against a history that was far from straightforward.

A career across rival shooter franchises

At Respawn, Zampella helped build another studio associated with major action games, including Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. EA acquired Respawn in 2017, and he later took on oversight of the Battlefield franchise in 2021. By the end of his career, his work linked several series that competed for the same players.

Battlefield 6 launched in October 2025, two months before Zampella died in a car crash that December. Its commercial success became part of his final chapter at EA; tbreak subsequently covered the Battlefield studio job cuts that followed the series’ record launch. His influence extended across both the studios he founded and the teams he later led.

In its December 2025 coverage, The Verge reproduced Infinity Ward’s statement recognising Zampella’s place in the studio’s history. The Modern Warfare 4 dedication now carries that recognition into a game, where players encounter his name after the campaign. It honours a founding figure whose career continued well beyond Call of Duty, without losing the connection to where that series began.
