Searchlight Pictures has released a second trailer for Behemoth!, the Tony Gilroy drama starring Pedro Pascal as a cellist who comes home after two decades away. According to Slant, the new trailer arrived on Wednesday with a new poster, nearly four weeks after the film’s world premiere as the centrepiece of the New York Film Festival. Deadline reports that Searchlight dated the film for December 4, 2026, when it unveiled the first trailer in July.
What the film is about
The official synopsis has a gifted cellist returning to Los Angeles after 20 years on the road, with music, the all-consuming river of his life, swelling into an adventure that will change him forever. UPI describes Pascal’s character, Alex Serian, as an orchestra musician who swaps live performances for recording film scores amid a mid-life crisis. Dark Horizons reports that each time he plays the opening cue from a different fictional movie, the music triggers a flashback showing why he left and what brought him home.
That structure explains the film’s most unusual feature. Dark Horizons says Gilroy hired nine composers to write one score each, among them Michael Giacchino, James Newton Howard, Alan Silvestri, Henry Jackman and Michael Abels. Slant notes the snippets are scores for movies that don’t exist. ComingSoon says the trailer opens with Alex looking puzzled as he’s asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
Cast and crew
Indiewire lists Eva Victor, Olivia Wilde and Will Arnett alongside Pascal, with Alexa Swinton, Kaya Ralls, Erik Griffin, JoBeth Williams, Margarita Levieva and Hank Azaria also in the cast. Gilroy wrote and directed, and produces with Sanne Wohlenberg and John Gilroy, while the music is credited to The Behemoth! Collective. It’s Gilroy’s first feature since The Bourne Legacy. His recent work has been on the small screen as the creator of Andor.
Early reaction from the festival is mixed. Slant’s review from New York praised Pascal’s “intense yet tender” presence. Wikipedia’s summary of the reviews says critics liked Pascal, Gilroy’s direction and the score, but criticised the writing and structure.
For Pascal, this lands in a busy stretch. He’s also in Avengers: Doomsday, and our Doomsday synopsis story covers that film’s multiversal setup. If you’re building a cinema list for the rest of the year and into 2027, our look at the Remain trailer covers another adult drama with a date already set.
