Olivier Richters, who plays Zangief in the 2026 Street Fighter movie, says every actor in the film signed on for three movies. In a YouTube comment on 25 October, as reported by IGN, he said the deal came with a promise: if a sequel gets made, Zangief will shine. It’s a cast member’s account rather than a studio announcement, and no follow-up has been greenlit.
The comment was a reply to a fan video complaining that the Red Cyclone barely appears on screen. Richters posted it under a Top Hat Gaming Man video about how the film “ruined” Zangief. His answer was that the small role was deliberate: the brief was to show a glimpse of the character and his power so viewers would want more. He added that a two-hour film with so many characters can’t give everyone a moment in the first part.
Zangief gets two scenes. In the first, Chun-Li gives him an invitation to the second World Warrior tournament. In the second, he brawls with Ken and company in a club fight. IGN says most of his moves in that scene come straight from the games, and his finisher was performed practically. Fans liked what they saw, but many wanted more of him and more of the tournament itself.
The three-film claim also helps explain the ending. IGN notes that the post-credits scene and abrupt finish set up a direct sequel, which suggests Legendary planned a series from the start. The movie closes on a cliffhanger, with Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile and Dhalsim setting off after Bison. Kotaku points out that there’s a big gap between signing up for a project and it actually getting made.
The studio hasn’t confirmed anything. Director Kitao Sakurai said earlier this month that a sequel is being written, but he tied any green light to how audiences respond to the first film. The numbers so far are modest. IGN reports a budget of around $80 million and a $51 million domestic opening that topped the US box office. As of 26 October, the film has grossed $79 million worldwide, which leaves it just short of its budget. Other outlets quote slightly different figures: ComicBook.com puts the budget at $82 million and the gross at $76 million. IGN expects a profit once the film’s remaining theatrical run and eventual streaming are counted, though a moderate one.
The cast has been vocal about wanting to return. They’ve also pitched a crossover with the Mortal Kombat crew, which we covered alongside Ed Boon’s response. Whether either idea moves forward depends on a studio decision that hasn’t been made yet.
Is a Street Fighter sequel confirmed?
No. Richters says the cast signed for three films, and Sakurai says a sequel is being written, but neither Legendary nor the studio has announced a green light.
How is the Street Fighter movie doing at the box office?
According to IGN, it opened at number one in the US with $51 million and has made $79 million worldwide as of 26 October. The reported budget is around $80 million, so it’s roughly at break-even before streaming and other revenue.
