Ed Boon isn’t ruling out a Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat crossover film, but he wants a game first. The Mortal Kombat co-creator replied after the Street Fighter cast told IGN they’d be up for the idea, which we covered in our earlier report on the cast’s reaction.
In a post on X on October 15, Boon wrote “Game first… then movie”, followed by a winking emoticon. IGN reads it as probable trolling, but notes it isn’t his first nod to the idea. In May 2026 he tweeted that he’d like a Street Fighter guest character in a Mortal Kombat game, calling himself a “huge fan” of the series.
The cast needed little persuasion. IGN spoke to them ahead of the film’s October 16 release, and Andrew Koji, who plays Ryu, answered with a simple “Hell yeah”. Noah Centineo, who plays Ken, said he wants more Street Fighter and would happily return for a Mortal Kombat crossover. IGN also reports that Andrew Schulz joked this was the real aim of his jab at the Mortal Kombat cast during the 2025 Game Awards.
A game crossover has been the sticking point before. According to IGN, Capcom rejected a proposal from NetherRealm for a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat, since the series’ brutality sat badly with Street Fighter’s branding. Former Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono confirmed this in a 2019 interview, adding that he didn’t make the call personally and that many people at Capcom felt the characters wouldn’t fit. He also said he’d discussed it with Boon at a game show in Brazil.
IGN suggests Capcom’s stance may have softened. The publisher’s recent openness to guest characters includes Yujiro Hanma joining Tekken 8, and a possible return of the Baki collaboration that ran in Street Fighter 6 in 2023 and 2024. On the film side, IGN reports that Paramount and Warner Bros have merged, leaving Skydance with the rights to both the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter movies, which would remove much of the usual red tape.
Nothing is planned on either front. The Street Fighter team is still focused on its own future, with a sequel already being written, and Mortal Kombat’s film series has its own open question in the stalled Mortal Kombat 3. If you’re heading to the cinema this weekend, the trailer’s Ken and Ryu reunion gives a good idea of what to expect.
Is a Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat crossover movie confirmed?
No. Boon’s reply was a tongue-in-cheek post on X, and neither Capcom nor the studios have announced a game or film.
Why did Capcom turn down a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat?
According to Yoshinori Ono’s 2019 comments, as reported by IGN, many Capcom staff felt the idea didn’t suit their characters. IGN links that to Mortal Kombat’s violence clashing with Street Fighter’s branding.
When does the Street Fighter movie come out?
IGN lists October 16 as the release date. Check local cinema listings in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt for showtimes.
