A man was arrested near the Brooklyn set of Miami Vice ’85 on Friday night after pulling a knife, and no one was hurt. What exactly set it off depends on who you ask: IGN relays TMZ’s version, in which the man threatened a crew member, while the NYPD describes a dispute with another man.

What police and TMZ say

According to NBC News, Alex Perez, 23, of Brooklyn, was arrested just after 11pm on accusations that he displayed a knife during a verbal dispute with another man near Avenue N and McDonald Avenue. The NYPD said he was taken into custody without incident and the knife was recovered. NBC reports he was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, and that it wasn’t clear whether he had retained an attorney. The production was filming along Bay Parkway and McDonald Avenue, near Washington Cemetery, at the time.

TMZ tells it differently. Citing NYPD information, IGN reports that the site says Perez was being escorted off the set by a staffer when he took a large knife from his sweatshirt pocket, and that an officer working security on the shoot then arrested him at 11:17pm. TMZ also published video of the incident, which we haven’t seen. It lists the charges as second-degree menacing with a weapon and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and says Perez has a criminal record. The two accounts agree on the arrest, the recovered knife, the charges and the lack of injuries. They differ on whether the crew was the target.

Where the film stands

The shoot isn’t expected to stall over this. IGN reports the production has been in New York this week, with scenes featuring Michael B. Jordan and John Leguizamo that appear to recreate the opening of the original series’ pilot. Joseph Kosinski directs a film inspired by the two-part pilot, “Brother’s Keeper”, and the show’s first season more broadly. Our first-look report covers Jordan and Austin Butler in costume as detectives Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett.

IGN says production will relocate to Miami, Florida, once hurricane season ends. The film opens in theaters on 19 May 2028. Security around high-profile shoots draws attention whenever fans or onlookers get close to the cast, as when Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns were kept apart on the Street Fighter set, but the NYPD hasn’t suggested this incident targeted the film or its stars.
