Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have their first official looks as Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice ’85. Universal has released two character pictures to mark the start of production on Joseph Kosinski’s film, which is scheduled to reach cinemas on 19 May 2028.

IGN’s first-look report shows both actors in costume with guns in hand. The pictures introduce the new versions of the undercover detectives, but they’re character reveals rather than a trailer or a detailed preview of the story.

The production milestone gives the reboot a fresh update after several casting announcements. Tbreak previously covered Walton Goggins’ reported addition to the cast; the first-look release now puts the two leads at the centre of the film’s publicity.

A return to the original series’ Miami

Variety reports that the film draws inspiration from the original television show’s pilot episode and first season. Its premise centres on the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, rather than moving the detectives into a contemporary setting.

The original series ran from 1984 to 1989, with Don Johnson as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs. Jordan and Butler inherit those roles for this film. Michael Mann’s 2006 adaptation previously paired Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as the detectives, so this is another big-screen interpretation of the television characters, not a return for that film’s lead actors.

Kosinski directs after Top Gun: Maverick and F1, and produces alongside Dylan Clark. Variety credits Dan Gilroy with the screenplay and identifies Eric Warren Singer as the writer of an earlier draft. That distinction is more specific than simply listing both as writers of the current script.

Who else is in the cast?

Beyond Jordan and Butler, Variety lists Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland, and Michael Irby.

Tbreak’s earlier coverage of John Leguizamo’s reported villain role followed the casting news in September. The latest report confirms his place in the ensemble without outlining his character’s part in the plot.

Production has started, but the release is still more than a year away. For now, the photographs establish the leads’ appearance; they don’t reveal how closely the finished film will follow the pilot’s story or how the wider cast fits around the detective partnership.

When is Miami Vice ’85 due in cinemas?

The announced cinema release date is 19 May 2028. A separate UAE release date hasn’t been confirmed in the reports cited here.

Is the new film set in the present day?

No. The announced premise places it in mid-1980s Miami and draws on the original TV series’ pilot and first season.
