DICE and Bungie have been named as potential developers of Star Wars Battlefront 3 in a rumour published in Electronic Gaming Monthly’s comeback issue. According to VGC’s report, the magazine’s Quartermann column claims Lucasfilm is looking for a development partner for a follow-up. The claim points to interest in reviving the series, with no officially announced sequel attached.
There’s already a competing account of where that search stands. In an update to its coverage, Wccftech reports that Bulkhead Games CEO Joe Brammer claims Battlefront 3 is in development at DICE and Respawn. His post on X names a different studio pairing from the magazine rumour, leaving the developer question unresolved.
Where the DICE and Bungie rumour started
The original claim comes from a new print issue produced through the Electronic Gaming Monthly Compendium Kickstarter campaign. Polygon reports that Giant Bomb journalist and EGM contributor Jeff Grubb read the passage during Monday’s Game Mess Mornings. The column describes Lucasfilm seeking a partner, with DICE and Bungie circling the project.
That gives the story a narrower basis than several studios independently signalling their interest. VGC and Polygon both trace their accounts to the same magazine column, rather than separate confirmations from the developers. Polygon also quotes Grubb’s interpretation that conversations appear to be taking place, while the game itself does not sound as though it is in production yet. Brammer’s subsequent claim describes a more advanced stage, but the reports do not establish how those accounts fit together.
DICE would be the familiar choice because it developed EA’s 2015 Star Wars Battlefront and its 2017 sequel. Bungie’s inclusion is the surprise: the studio behind Halo, Destiny, and Marathon would bring a different shooter pedigree to the series. Wccftech’s account of Grubb’s comments also records his scepticism about Bungie ultimately getting the project, despite his enthusiasm for what its gunplay could offer.
Why Battlefront is back in the conversation
VGC links renewed interest in the series to Battlefront 2’s 2025 resurgence, when Reddit and TikTok communities encouraged players to return. The game reached its highest Steam concurrent-player figures during that revival. That sustained audience is the rationale behind the magazine’s rumour, although player enthusiasm alone does not establish that a sequel has been commissioned.
The return also contrasts with Battlefront 2’s troubled 2017 launch. Its progression and microtransaction systems drew intense criticism, particularly over the time required to unlock famous characters such as Darth Vader. VGC recounts how EA reversed its initial microtransaction plans after the backlash, before the game eventually found a warmer reception.
Bungie, meanwhile, already has substantial work on its existing games. In September, the studio outlined plans to restore vaulted Destiny 2 content and reshape Marathon after acknowledging it had lost players’ trust. That followed Marathon director Joe Ziegler’s departure earlier this year, putting the Battlefront rumour alongside a period of change at the studio. Neither account supplies a staffing plan for a Star Wars project.
Has Star Wars Battlefront 3 been officially announced?
No official announcement is established by these reports. There is no confirmed release date, platform list, or purchase information for a new entry.
Would this continue the original Battlefront 3 that was cancelled?
The reporting discusses a follow-up to DICE’s modern Battlefront games. The cancelled Free Radical project belonged to the earlier series that followed Pandemic’s games, so these are separate projects despite sharing the potential Battlefront 3 name.
