Vincent Pastore’s death was confirmed by his manager
Pastore’s death was confirmed by his longtime manager, Bob McGowan. The actor was found dead at his residence in the Bronx on 1 August 2026, according to Deadline reports and other outlets.
Pastore was 80. He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore, as well as his son-in-law and granddaughter.
McGowan remembered the actor’s generosity in a statement: “Vinny was a great guy, he would help anyone and was very charitable.”
Big Pussy became Pastore’s defining role
Pastore was best known for playing Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in HBO’s The Sopranos. The character was Tony Soprano’s longtime friend and mob enforcer before becoming an FBI informant, placing Pastore at the centre of one of the drama’s most consequential storylines.
Big Pussy gave Pastore a role that could be threatening, wounded, and darkly human within the same scene. His performance helped turn the character’s divided loyalties into a personal crisis rather than a simple plot device, strengthening the emotional stakes around Tony Soprano and his inner circle.
Pastore had already built an extensive screen career before The Sopranos premiered in 1999. His earlier credits included Goodfellas, Carlito’s Way, Men of Respect, The Jerky Boys: The Movie, and the HBO television film Gotti, where he appeared alongside future Sopranos actors Tony Sirico, Frank Vincent, and Dominic Chianese.
His later film work included Mickey Blue Eyes, Riding in Cars with Boys, Shark Tale, Revolver, Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn, and Spinning Gold. On television, he appeared in Law & Order, The Practice, Hawaii Five-0, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, One Life to Live, Gravesend, and Yellowjackets.
Pastore built a career far beyond mob dramas
Pastore’s work extended across films, scripted television, reality programmes, radio, theatre, and music. During the 2000s, he appeared on Celebrity Apprentice, Celebrity Family Feud, Dancing With the Stars, Shark Tank, and Celebrity Fit Club.
He also hosted The Wiseguy Show on SiriusXM and performed with the band The Gangster Squad. Those projects reflected the range behind a performer whose imposing screen presence often made him an immediate choice for gangster roles.
Born in the Bronx on 14 July 1946, Pastore served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and later studied drama at Pace University. He worked as a limousine driver before establishing himself as an actor, eventually building a career that spanned decades.
Big Pussy will remain his signature character, but Pastore’s long list of credits shows the working actor behind that famous role: dependable, distinctive, and capable of making even a supporting appearance linger.
