Dave Bautista is officially Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War series, Variety reports, weeks after reports that the actor was in talks for the part. He replaces Ryan Hurst, who tore a bicep during a stunt on set in June and needed surgery — a recovery that would have delayed production into 2027.

Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the show, shot back-to-back. Filming began in Vancouver in February, and production is expected to resume in the coming weeks with Bautista in place. Scenes already shot with Hurst will be reshot.

Who is in the God of War series cast

Bautista joins Callum Vinson as Atreus — the father is new, the son is not — plus Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Max Parker plays Heimdall, Alastair Duncan plays Mimir, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka play the brothers Brok and Sindri. Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind) is showrunner; Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios produce with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

What the God of War series covers

The show adapts the two most recent games, following Kratos and his young son Atreus through the Norse pantheon. Per the official logline:

“Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

Prime Video

The recast also spares the production a long wait: per The Hollywood Reporter, Bautista is one of few in Hollywood who could step into the role on short notice in the physical shape it requires. The distance between Drax and Kratos is not a long walk.

The series will stream on Prime Video, which is available in the UAE.
