Peacemaker was the least likely hit in the entire DC catalogue: a spin-off of The Suicide Squad built around a supporting character whose whole thing is strutting around in a bucket-helmet and murdering people in the name of peace. That it became one of the few fun things DC has made this decade is almost entirely down to John Cena committing to the bit with a sincerity the material does not deserve. Officially, Peacemaker is about Christopher “Chris” Smith, a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. Coming off his near-fatal duel with Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, Chris finds himself conscripted into a shadowy government unit chasing alien parasites that look like butterflies, and soon discovers that his freedom comes with a price. Unpacked, it is a show about a deeply damaged man using noise, violence and an eagle named Eagly to avoid ever sitting still long enough to examine himself. The synopsis sells it as a hero’s journey; the show knows it is a therapy session with a body count, and that honesty is why the jokes land.

Who Is in the Cast?
John Cena leads as Christopher “Chris” Smith, and the performance is the whole trick — he plays the arrogance so loud that the cracks underneath read as comedy rather than tragedy. Danielle Brooks grounds the chaos as Leota Adebayo, the new teammate who quietly becomes the conscience the show pretends it does not have. Freddie Stroma’s Adrian Chase, aka Vigilante, is the scene-stealer: a magnificently unhinged take on the sidekick that turns every scene he is in. Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee’s John Economos complete the core unit, Frank Grillo arrives in season two as the haunted Rick Flag Sr., and Robert Patrick brings the bile as Chris’s monstrous father, the White Dragon. It is the best ensemble DC TV has fielded in years, almost entirely because nobody on screen appears to be acting in the same show.
