The casting is reported, but Marvel has not announced it
Deadline reports that Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost in Marvel Studios’ upcoming MCU X-Men film. Marvel Studios has not formally announced Weaving’s casting as of yet.
According to Deadline, director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige met with “a number of candidates” before settling on Weaving. Deadline reporter Justin Kroll subsequently said on X that auditions for several roles had been taking place since May.
No other members of the new X-Men ensemble were named in the report. That leaves Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, and the rest of Marvel’s mutant-sized casting problem waiting in the wings.
Weaving has the right edge for Emma Frost
Samara Weaving’s mix of horror, comedy, and dramatic work makes her a compelling choice for Emma Frost. Her credits include Ash vs Evil Dead, Ready or Not, Scream 6, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, alongside more recent appearances in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come and Over Your Dead Body.
Those performances make the appeal easy to see. Weaving can bring polished charm and a dangerous streak to the same character, which is exactly the combination Emma Frost demands. It is sharp casting on paper — assuming Marvel eventually puts its own name on the news.
Emma Frost made her comics debut in the 1980s and is known primarily for telepathy and the ability to transform her body into a nearly indestructible diamond form. Whether the MCU presents her as an antagonist or an ally to the X-Men remains unknown.
The character has appeared in live action before, including X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, with January Jones playing the role. Weaving would therefore be introducing a new MCU incarnation rather than bringing back the earlier film version.
The wider X-Men cast remains under wraps
Marvel has not revealed the rest of the new X-Men team or given the film a firm release date. Kevin Feige previously indicated that the characters would be recast, but the studio has yet to present its new ensemble.
Marvel’s official movie slate lists Avengers: Doomsday for 18 December 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars for 17 December 2027. It does not currently include a dedicated page for the upcoming X-Men film, leaving its place in the MCU schedule unclear.
Weaving’s reported casting is nevertheless the first substantial clue about how Schreier’s film may approach the mutants. Emma Frost is a character who can enter the story from several directions, and Weaving is an inspired choice for every one of them. Marvel now needs to confirm the news and introduce the rest of the class.
