A free mod for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has turned the Jackdaw’s sails into a “No Disc, No Buy” protest sign, in the latest skirmish over Sony’s decision to end disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028.
Uploaded to Nexus Mods on 29 July by user anaughtyotter, “No Disc No Buy Sails” swaps the Jackdaw’s sails for black, blue and black-and-gold textures carrying the movement’s slogan:
“If Buying Isn’t Owning, Pirating Isn’t Stealing.”
The file credits are equally blunt:
“Special thanks to the console manufacturers for removing physical ownership, requiring everything to be online, charging full price, and calling it ‘convenience.’”
The mod is cosmetic. It works on the PC version of Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft’s remake of the 2013 pirate original, and needs the free Sail Workshop utility to apply.
Why the protest exists
Sony announced on 1 July that physical disc production for all new PlayStation games will end in January 2028, with new releases sold digitally only, at PlayStation Store and at retailers. Games released before that date are unaffected.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” the company said.
The numbers explain the decision. Sony’s data shows nearly four in five full-game purchases on PS4 and PS5 last year were digital, and the Guardian counted only seven PS5 games that have sold more than 100,000 physical copies in the US this year.
No Disc, No Buy
The movement behind the sails has called for a week-long “PS5 Blackout” in the final week of August: no playing, no buying, no logging in. tbreak has followed the disc exit and the backlash since Sony confirmed it.
A game about piracy is now carrying the argument that piracy is not stealing. The sails are free; at the time of writing, three people have downloaded them.

How do you install the No Disc No Buy sails mod?
Download it from Nexus Mods and extract the sail textures, then use the free Sail Workshop utility to pick a sail on the Jackdaw and apply the PNG texture. It is cosmetic only — the mod does not change gameplay — and requires the PC version of Black Flag Resynced.
Will existing PlayStation discs stop working in 2028?
No. Sony’s change ends disc production for new games releasing from January 2028 only. Games released before that date keep their disc versions, and discs already on shelves keep working.
