What has Sony said about PS5 memory supply?
Sony says it has secured enough memory to meet its projected PS5 sales volume throughout FY26. The commitment appears in the company’s latest earnings presentation, which covers the fiscal year running from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
“Regarding the impact of memory market conditions on PlayStation 5 hardware, we have secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet our projected sales volume for FY26,” Sony said. The company added that its plan for PS5 hardware profitability remains similar to FY25.
The assurance comes as an AI-driven squeeze on memory and storage supply pushes up costs across gaming hardware. Sony’s procurement volumes have not been independently verified, so its statement should be treated as the company’s assessment of its own supply position.
How is the PS5 performing ahead of GTA VI?
PS5 sales slowed during Sony’s latest quarter, although the console’s installed base continued to grow. Sony sold 1.38 million PS5 consoles during the quarter, down from 1.56 million in the equivalent period a year earlier, while lifetime sales reached 95.3 million units.
PlayStation recorded 125 million monthly active users, an increase of 2 million year on year. Sony also raised its projected fiscal-year revenue by approximately 3% and operating income by approximately 10%.
The company has not promised that PS5 prices will remain unchanged. Its statement says the FY26 hardware profitability plan remains similar to FY25, but that does not rule out further pricing decisions if component costs or other market conditions change.
Should buyers choose a PS5 or wait for PS6?
Sony’s memory announcement does not settle whether buyers should purchase a PS5 or wait for PS6. It offers reassurance about planned PS5 production through March 2027, but provides no confirmed PS6 launch date, specification, or relationship with GTA VI.
Players buying specifically for GTA VI have a confirmed current-generation release window in November 2026. Those waiting for PS6 would be making that decision without confirmed timing or hardware details, while Sony’s current assurance applies only to PS5 production during FY26.
Supply beyond that fiscal year also remains uncertain. Sony has addressed the immediate memory requirement for its projected PS5 sales, not the longer-term effect of rising memory costs on future PlayStation hardware.
