Marvel’s Wolverine will be fully playable from its disc when it launches on PS5 on 15 September, Insomniac has confirmed — no download required, no box that merely holds a code. It may be one of the last PlayStation games where the disc is the game.
The confirmation came from senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed at a preview event this week, in an interview with Eurogamer.
“Marvel’s Wolverine will come out in digital and physical [versions] and the game will be fully playable on the disc when you purchase it.”

The studio is still spending the months before launch on polish and bug fixes, and says the day-one patch is worth taking.
“I would say we’re perfectionists. We take every minute we can get to just tweak this little thing, make everything a little bit better — we’re gonna squeeze as much out of it as we can. And so if players download that patch, they get that little bit of extra time.”
Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology, Insomniac Games
Asked how the studio felt about its owner’s disc plans, Fitzgerald steered back to the game. “Today we just want to focus on the game,” he said.
Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 disc: one of the last playable discs
Sony announced in July it will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028 — a move tbreak covered at the time. It ends second-hand sales of new releases, makes disc drives redundant and leaves PlayStation’s store as the only place to buy new games. “This is all about control,” industry experts told Eurogamer when it was announced. The decision drew petitions and protests, and Wolverine’s cinematic trailers have been swarmed by fans unhappy with it.
Sony’s own launch merchandising leans the other way: the Battle Yellow Limited Edition bundle announced this week is a PS5 Digital Edition with a matching DualSense and a game code. The flagship hardware for Wolverine’s launch ships without a disc drive.

What it means if you’re gaming in the UAE
Wolverine’s disc is up for pre-order in the UAE — AED 279 on Geekay, and the UAE version is listed on Amazon.ae; the digital edition is $69.99 on the UAE PlayStation Store, about AED 257 at the peg. The game carries an MRO 21 rating here. New discs will keep reaching UAE shelves until Sony’s January 2028 cutoff — and some releases have already dropped the disc: GTA VI’s UAE edition ships as a code in a box.

What does ‘fully playable on disc’ mean?
It means the game installs and runs from the disc without downloading it first — unlike a code-in-box release, where the box holds a download code. Marvel’s Wolverine will be fully playable from its disc at launch; Insomniac recommends the day-one patch for extra polish and bug fixes, but it is not required.
When does Marvel’s Wolverine launch on PS5?
Marvel’s Wolverine launches on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro on 15 September 2026. The Standard Edition costs $69.99 (about AED 257 in the UAE) and the Digital Deluxe Edition $79.99; the physical disc is available from retailers.
Is Sony ending physical PlayStation discs?
Yes. Sony will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. Discs already on shelves will still be sold after that, but new releases will be digital only.
