Marvel’s Wolverine has exactly one playable character — and it isn’t Jean Grey

Wolverine is the only playable character in Marvel’s Wolverine — Insomniac confirms no Jean Grey sequences and no Spider-Man-style interludes; the team-up moves stay.

Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine has exactly one playable character: Wolverine. The story trailer shown in late July ended on the camera pulling back behind Jean Grey as she entered a dance hall — the kind of shot that usually sets up a playable sequence. It does not.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed and head of technology Mike Fitzgerald were asked about that moment. Both registered “a bit of genuine confusion” before answering, the outlet reports.

“Wolverine is our only playable character.”

The answer will come as a relief to anyone who remembers the weakest stretches of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Those shipped sections where control left the hero — most notoriously the Mary Jane stealth missions — and GamesRadar+ calls this a promise not to repeat them.

The absence of a second playable hero does not make the game a solo walk. Combat sections in previews featured Sabretooth and Mystique joining Wolverine dynamically for team-up moves, and similar interactions with Jean Grey appeared in the public gameplay reveal.

“There’s definitely the team vibe in that sense. But we were really focusing on Wolverine as a playable character and making sure we nailed that.”

That is the design brief in one line: the game is a linear single-player adventure built around one man and his healing factor, with allies passing through rather than taking over.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on PS5 on September 15, 2026. Standard and Digital Deluxe editions are available to pre-order on the UAE PlayStation Store.
