Light, the company behind the distraction-free Light Phone line, has built its first clamshell — the Light Flip — and priced it at $299 (approximately AED 1,097). It’s a 5G flip phone with a physical T9 keypad, no touchscreen, and an operating system that deliberately refuses to install the apps you’d reach for out of boredom. Light says it keeps hearing from younger buyers who want flip phones, but finds the existing options “poorly made, slow, unsupported, and often pre-installed with the same addictive apps built in.” So it took the software running on its existing devices and dropped it into the one form factor those buyers keep asking for.
What actually makes it distraction-free?
The distraction-free part comes down to LightOS, a stripped-down version of Android that ships without a Play Store, social media, or feed-style apps. In their place sit strictly utilitarian tools: a music player, an alarm clock, GPS navigation, a calculator, and notes. The whole thing is designed, in Light’s words, to keep you on your phone “as little as possible.”
The thing is, this software isn’t new. Earlier Light Phones already shipped without social apps and endless feeds, so the anti-scroll philosophy predates the Flip. What’s genuinely new is the packaging. Where Light’s previous models were squarish touchscreen slabs, the Flip drops the touchscreen entirely in favour of a T9 keypad, with voice-to-text and audio messaging to soften the blow of typing on numbers again. There’s no external cover screen either, which removes one more reason to keep glancing at the thing.
Whether that translates into less doomscrolling is a claim built on hardware and software choices rather than any measured study. Remove the feeds, the app store, and the touchscreen, and there is simply less to compulsively refresh.
The specs
The Flip is a modern phone underneath the retro shell. It packs a matte 2.8-inch OLED screen, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage — far more than a basic feature phone needs, which tells you the money is going on build quality and the OS rather than raw silicon. There’s a 50-megapixel camera, a replaceable 1,800 mAh battery, and 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Then there are the small mercies. The Flip has a 3.5mm headphone jack — a genuinely useful inclusion — and even a charm loop. At 19mm thick when folded it’s a chunky little thing, and narrower but taller than Light’s earlier models, though still far smaller than any current smartphone slab. Can you buy it in the UAE?
Not through a local retailer, at least not yet. The Light Flip retails at $299 (approximately AED 1,097) and preorders run through Light’s own website, with the first units arriving in April 2027.
