The Lanterns TV series is averaging nearly 19 million viewers per episode worldwide, with more than 12 million in the US, as its first-season finale approaches on 4 October. Variety reports that the average is still rising as new viewers catch up.

What Lanterns’ seven-million figure measures

That season average is separate from the first-three-day count for an individual episode. The seventh episode reached seven million US viewers in its first three days across HBO’s cable channel and HBO Max, measured by Nielsen. HBO did not provide a global figure for episode seven.

The Lanterns TV series has continued to bring in viewers beyond its premiere. Variety reported that 1.5 million new viewers watched the pilot in the week before its latest report, while HBO Max says the premiere has passed 20 million viewers worldwide in total. Those cumulative pilot views are not the same measure as the show’s per-episode average.

Lanterns TV series viewership compared with other HBO dramas

Episode seven’s US audience matches the seven million recorded for episode three in its first three days; that earlier instalment also drew 10 million viewers worldwide in the same window, according to Variety. The season’s reported global average now sits close to It: Welcome to Derry, which later averaged 19.7 million viewers per episode after its most-watched episode drew 6.5 million US viewers in three days.

These are not like-for-like season snapshots: Lanterns has yet to finish its first run, while the other figures are completed-season averages. The series also started from a 9.3 million global premiere audience in three days, including 6.6 million in the US, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Our earlier report on the premiere covered that opening-week figure.

The finale is scheduled to air on Sunday, 4 October, according to Variety and IGN. In the UAE, the series streams on OSN+; see our Lanterns UAE viewing guide for local details.

How does Lanterns compare with The Penguin so far?

Lanterns is averaging nearly 19 million viewers per episode worldwide before its finale. The Penguin finished 2024 above 27 million per episode, so Lanterns has not reached that reported average; the figures are from different stages of each show’s run.

What does the seven-million figure for episode seven count?

It is a US-only total for the episode’s first three days, combining Nielsen-measured HBO cable viewers and HBO Max streams. HBO did not provide a matching global total for episode seven.

Why could Lanterns’ average change after the finale?

The reported figure is a current season average, not a final 90-day total. Variety also reported that 1.5 million new viewers watched the pilot in the latest week, so catch-up viewing can keep changing the series’ cumulative audience.
