Lanterns Episode 3’s first teaser finally shows Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern’s domino mask, and it introduces Laura Linney as one of the Guardians of the Universe. HBO dropped the 42-second preview on Sunday, after Episode 2, “Trust Fall”, wrapped.
The mask moment comes about 17 seconds in: an old television plays what looks like news footage of Hal, suited up in the full Green Lantern outfit with the bright-green domino mask over his eyes. It is a brief flash, and IGN reads it as archival material from Hal’s earlier days rather than a look at how the present-day costume will evolve — the show has already hinted it will skip around the timeline, possibly back to 1996.
The more consequential thread is John Stewart. The teaser has the Green Lantern-in-training coming face to face with Linney’s Guardian, and its caption is blunt: “John Stewart was born for this.”
It follows the end of Episode 2, in which Hal confronted Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) inside an intergalactic prison. Sinestro’s parting warning was that a surviving Manhunter is only the second-greatest threat Hal faces — the greater one being John himself.
The Guardian’s arrival is the piece fans have been waiting on. Linney had been confirmed in the cast, but this is the first look at her character in action, and the first sign of how the series will handle the cosmic side of the Corps. Whether the domino mask is a one-off Easter egg or a sign of things to come is another question — the last live-action Hal to wear it was Ryan Reynolds in 2011, which is a sentence that carries its own verdict.
