Oded Fehr has a simple view of The Mummy franchise: there are two films. His co-star John Hannah disagrees, and he made the point without speaking.

According to IGN, the pair were doing a joint interview at Comic Con Holland while The Mummy 4 shoots ahead of its October 15, 2027 release. Fehr, who returns as Ardeth Bay, was reflecting on the original films when he skipped the third. “The Mummy, The Mummy Returns — there wasn’t a third one,” he said, before calling the first two simply fun. Hannah, back as Jonathan Carnahan, held three fingers up to the camera and mouthed that there was a third movie. Fehr stuck to his line: “No, there were two,” he said, adding that it was a disagreement.

The banter lands because it echoes how many fans feel about The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The 2008 film recast Evelyn, with Maria Bello replacing Rachel Weisz, and Collider notes it was also the only entry set outside Egypt and didn’t feature Fehr or Arnold Vosloo’s Imhotep. Both men’s absence explains Fehr’s stance, and Hannah, who IGN says appeared in all three films, has his own reason to defend it.

The directors have already leaned Fehr’s way. When Entertainment Weekly asked whether Tomb of the Dragon Emperor counts as canon, GamesRadar reports that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin replied, “Well, Rachel is in this one.” Co-director Tyler Gillett added that this “should answer the question for you.” Neither said outright that the film is erased, so Hannah’s three fingers may not be entirely out of order.

The Mummy 4 reunites Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Weisz as Evelyn O’Connell, and Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett direct. Gizmodo reports that Universal moved the film up from its original May 19, 2028 slot to October 2027. The final title is still unannounced, but IGN says set photos have shown both Fraser and Weisz in character, in a setting that looks like 1950s post-war Britain.

When does The Mummy 4 come out?

Universal has dated it for October 15, 2027. No UAE release date has been announced.

Who is back for The Mummy 4?

Fraser and Weisz return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. Hannah is back as Jonathan Carnahan, and Fehr reprises Ardeth Bay.

Is The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor canon to the new film?

The directors haven’t said so in as many words. Asked by Entertainment Weekly in March, they pointed to Weisz’s return as the answer, which suggests the 2008 film isn’t being followed.
