Universal has given the fourth Mummy film its official name: The Mummy: Book of the Dead. The studio announced the title on Thursday, 15 October, in a post on the film’s official X account, and the date is the point of the timing. The film opens in cinemas on 15 October 2027, exactly one year later.

That date isn’t new, but it has moved before. MovieWeb notes that Universal originally slated the film for 19 May 2028 and pulled it forward by more than seven months in April 2026. Thursday’s announcement confirms the studio is holding to the earlier slot.

Who’s making it

Variety reports that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return as Rick and Evie O’Connell, joined by John Hannah, Michael Johnston, Numan Acar, Kevin J. O’Connor and Oded Fehr. Weisz hasn’t played Evie since 2001, because Maria Bello took over the role for 2008’s third film. Bloody Disgusting lists Johnston and Acar as the newcomers.

According to IGN, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence direct from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. The duo are best known for reviving the Scream franchise and for the vampire film Abigail. Sean Daniel, who has produced every film in the series, is back, and Variety adds William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and Clayton Townsend as producers, with Fraser and Jason F. Brown as executive producers.

What the title suggests

Universal hasn’t released a plot, so the rest is inference. The Book of the Dead is the artefact that raises Imhotep in the 1999 original, which makes the title a clear nod to that film. IGN reads it, together with Fehr’s return as Ardeth Bay, as a sign that Imhotep could come back. Neither Universal’s announcement nor Variety’s cast list confirms that.

Fehr has history with the question. IGN reports that he said his character had no reason to appear in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor without Imhotep as the villain, which is why he sat that one out. At Comic-Con Holland this year, the actor joked that “there wasn’t a third one”, referring to that film.

For UAE, Saudi and Egyptian readers, the practical news is the date. Universal has given 15 October 2027 as the theatrical release, but no regional dates have been announced yet. We’ll update when cinemas in the region list it. While you wait, other 2027 title reveals follow a similar pattern, as with Miami Vice ’85 and A Minecraft Movie Squared.

When does The Mummy: Book of the Dead come out?

Universal has set a theatrical release for 15 October 2027. No UAE or wider Middle East date has been confirmed.

Is Imhotep in the new Mummy film?

Universal hasn’t said. The cast it announced doesn’t list an actor for Imhotep, and the plot is under wraps, so any return remains speculation for now.

Who is directing The Mummy: Book of the Dead?

Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett direct, working from a script by David Coggeshall.
