Takashi Yamazaki isn’t ready to promise a third Godzilla film. The writer-director of Godzilla Minus Zero told The Hollywood Reporter that the odds of him returning are “about fifty-fifty at this point”, as IGN reports. The comment landed as the sequel opened in cinemas this week.

Satisfied with the ending, but not closing the door

Asked about the film’s ambiguous ending, which leaves room for the story to continue, Yamazaki said in the THR interview that he’s happy with it as it stands because it leaves the interpretation to the audience. He added that he’d be “a bit sad” if Minus Zero turned out to be his last Godzilla film, and that he’d like to revisit the franchise at some point in his career. That’s a long way from a greenlight, and Yamazaki makes clear that other work comes first.

The first of those projects is Grandgear. IGN reports that the film, announced in 2024, is his first major Hollywood studio movie and his first English-language feature. Sony Pictures is behind it, with a release slated for 18 February 2028. IGN lists Sam Nivola, Nico Parker and Paul Giamatti in the cast, and says Bad Robot is producing a live-action sci-fi mecha story that Yamazaki is writing and directing. He told THR it’s something he has “always wanted to do”.

Why he didn’t chase a bigger sequel

Yamazaki also told IGN that he set aside any urge to top Godzilla Minus One while writing Minus Zero. In his view, trying to outdo a hit risks diluting what made it work in the first place, and the pressure becomes an “antagonist” in the process. That fits with what we’ve heard from him before, when he promised a “whole new level of terror” for the follow-up.

The expectations are high. IGN says Minus One became a box-office hit in 2023 and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. IGN also says Minus Zero is the first R-rated Godzilla movie and the first Japanese film shot specifically for IMAX screens. Its own review rated the film Good, praising the monster-destruction set pieces. If you want a taste of the scale, the trailer with the New York attack is the place to start.
