HBO has made it official: Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will lead True Detective Season 5. IGN reports that the pairing was confirmed in a video post on the show’s X account, with production due to start in 2027. No release date has been announced.
Cage’s involvement was already an open secret. Reports linked him to the season in August 2025, then went quiet until he told a New York Comic Con crowd last weekend that he’d “probably” do another season of television, adding “I think I might do a season of True Detective.” Banderas was the unconfirmed half of the duo, so the announcement settles both questions at once.
Who plays whom
According to TheWrap, Cage plays Detective Henry Logan, a New York detective who investigates the central mystery, while Banderas plays Rai García. Further character details are under wraps. Dark Horizons reports that both actors are also executive producers, alongside Issa López, series creator Nic Pizzolatto, and Season 1 stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
López, who ran Night Country (Season 4, with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis), returns as showrunner, writer and director. The story moves from Ennis, Alaska, to Jamaica Bay, New York, but it isn’t a clean break. López told TheWrap the references will lean towards Season 4 and that supernatural elements stay: “It’s the same universe, and the magical realism is my brand.”
Why the timing works
Night Country is a hard act to follow. Dark Horizons says it was the most-watched season of the series to date, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, and the show has 41 Emmy nominations and six wins overall. A Cage and Banderas pairing gives HBO two well-known leads for a season that’s still more than a year from cameras.
It also keeps Cage busy after a short run on the small screen. His last series, Spider-Noir, didn’t get a second season, and our Spider-Noir trailer coverage shows how different his 1930s detective looks from a modern New York cop. Banderas arrives from the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony, which IGN lists among his recent roles.
With production not starting until 2027, expect a long wait before any footage or a title appears. For now the cast, setting and showrunner are all that’s confirmed.
Do I need to watch Night Country first?
Each True Detective season tells a standalone story, so you can start with Season 5 without it. López says the new season shares a universe with Season 4 and will reference it, so watching Night Country first adds context.
